Gumi reacted after a photo went viral on Thursday, February 5, allegedly showing him being apprehended by US troops at a Nigerian airport. Some posts further alleged that the cleric was intercepted while attempting to travel to Turkey, amid suspicions connecting him to terrorist groups and their camps.

Speaking via telephone on Thursday, Gumi firmly rejected the allegations, questioning their logic.

“The US Army cannot arrest me in Nigeria. Why would the US Army come to arrest me here? For what reason?” he asked.

He also challenged the authenticity of the viral image, insisting it was not genuine but digitally fabricated.

“The picture is generated by Artificial Intelligence. Even a layperson can tell it is AI,” he said, urging the public not to take the image seriously.

Gumi concluded by stressing that he had not been arrested.

The cleric remains a controversial figure due to his past engagements with armed groups and remarks many Nigerians consider sympathetic to bandits.

In 2021, he drew widespread attention after holding meetings with leaders of bandit groups in Kaduna, Zamfara, and other North-West states as part of efforts to secure the release of abducted victims. While some of those talks reportedly led to the release of captives and earned praise from affected families, they also raised serious concerns within Nigeria’s security establishment.
