Senate Delays Verdict On Electoral Act Amendment After 4-Hour Debate

Sources report that the extended discussion ended without a clear resolution, further delaying amendments considered crucial to Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of upcoming elections.
The upper chamber began by reviewing the consolidated report of the ad hoc committee, which was tasked with collating and harmonizing senators’ submissions and opinions on the bill. After initial discussions in open plenary, lawmakers moved into a closed session to scrutinize the documents submitted by the committee.
When the Senate reconvened, Senate President Godswill Akpabio did not disclose the outcome, adjourning the plenary to the next legislative day and effectively stalling progress on the bill.
Last week, the Senate constituted the seven-member ad hoc committee after over two hours of intense debate on the bill’s provisions during another closed-door session. The committee was mandated to compile, harmonize, and present a unified report on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
The panel is chaired by Senator Niyi Adebomore, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. Other members include Senators Adamu Aliero, Aminu Tambuwal, Adams Oshiomhole, Danjuma Goje, Tony Nwoye, and Titus Zam.
Review of Documents Behind Closed Doors
On Tuesday, the Senate formally commenced consideration of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026, before moving into a closed-door session to allow lawmakers to carefully examine proposed amendments and supporting documents submitted by Senator Simon Lalong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters.
Sources told Channels Television that the documents contained detailed proposals and justifications aimed at refining Nigeria’s electoral laws.
The delay follows a previous decision by the Senate to defer consideration of the bill to give lawmakers more time for a detailed and informed review. Despite expectations that Tuesday’s session would produce a clear outcome, the silence from Senate leadership has raised fresh questions about the pace and direction of the amendment process.
For now, the fate of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill remains uncertain, as Nigerians await the Senate’s next move.
