House Of Reps Denies Allegations Of Delaying Electoral Act Amendment.

The House of Representatives has rejected claims that the National Assembly is intentionally stalling the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, saying the perceived delay is procedural, not political, and expressing confidence that harmonisation will be completed next week.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, Adebayo Balogun, said both chambers are actively working on the bill. “The Senate is in session, considering the bill. Hopefully, the harmonisation will be completed by next week,” Balogun, representing Ibeju‑Lekki, told Punch. He added that once harmonised, the bill will be sent to the President for assent ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Senate Delays Persist
Despite progress claims, the Senate again failed to conclude work on the bill, holding a closed-door session that lasted over four hours without revealing decisions. The session involved the report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, chaired by Senator Simon Lalong, and input from a seven-member ad hoc committee led by Senator Niyi Adegbonmire.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio offered only a vague summary, saying the chamber deliberated on “matters relating to the working of the Senate in particular and the nation in general,” before senators approved the statement and adjourned plenary. No timeline for the bill’s final passage was provided.

Concerns Ahead of 2027 Elections
The slow pace has raised concerns about Nigeria’s electoral preparedness for 2027. The bill aims to strengthen electoral integrity, mandate real-time electronic transmission of results, impose stricter sanctions for offences, replace smart card readers with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, protect vulnerable voters, and criminalise presiding officers’ refusal to sign or stamp materials.

Opposition parties, including ADC, LP, and NNPP, have criticised the delays, warning they could undermine public confidence in the polls. Senior Advocate Femi Falana has accused the National Assembly of neglecting the bill to maintain the status quo, noting lawmakers focus more on defections than electoral reform.

Despite the criticism, National Assembly leaders maintain that the delay is due to procedural requirements and the need for concurrence between the House and Senate before the bill can be sent for presidential assent.
