According to a statement by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media & Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Onyekwere was apprehended on Thursday during passenger clearance of a South African Airways flight arriving from Brazil via Johannesburg, following actionable intelligence.

A full-body scan confirmed the presence of illicit substances, and a subsequent strip search uncovered a large parcel of white powder wrapped around his right thigh. Further inspection revealed two additional wraps hidden in the soles of his flat shoes. In total, NDLEA recovered three large wraps of cocaine weighing 1.60 kilograms.

During a preliminary interview, the 47-year-old suspect admitted purchasing the drugs in Brazil with plans to resell them in Nigeria to raise capital for his business and to fund the naming ceremony of his newborn child. Onyekwere has reportedly lived in São Paulo since 2008 and has operated a toy business there for approximately nine years.

In a separate operation, NDLEA seized 55 jumbo bags of Canadian Loud cannabis, totaling 1,183 kilograms, imported from Montreal, Canada. The drugs were concealed in two vehicles—a Hyundai SUV and a Toyota Matrix—at the Tincan seaport in Lagos during a joint inspection with Customs and other security agencies.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.
