According to a statement by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media & Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Onyekwere was apprehended on Thursday during passenger clearance of a South African Airways flight arriving from Brazil via Johannesburg, following actionable intelligence.
A full-body scan confirmed the presence of illicit substances, and a subsequent strip search uncovered a large parcel of white powder wrapped around his right thigh. Further inspection revealed two additional wraps hidden in the soles of his flat shoes. In total, NDLEA recovered three large wraps of cocaine weighing 1.60 kilograms.
During a preliminary interview, the 47-year-old suspect admitted purchasing the drugs in Brazil with plans to resell them in Nigeria to raise capital for his business and to fund the naming ceremony of his newborn child. Onyekwere has reportedly lived in São Paulo since 2008 and has operated a toy business there for approximately nine years.
In a separate operation, NDLEA seized 55 jumbo bags of Canadian Loud cannabis, totaling 1,183 kilograms, imported from Montreal, Canada. The drugs were concealed in two vehicles—a Hyundai SUV and a Toyota Matrix—at the Tincan seaport in Lagos during a joint inspection with Customs and other security agencies.
In Niger State, operatives acting on intelligence intercepted a long truck along the Dei-Dei Abuja Expressway on January 26. Three suspects—Andy Chidogu (49), Kenneth Ogene (45), and Sadiq Olanrewaju (27)—were arrested for transporting 176 bags of skunk cannabis weighing 2,735 kilograms, along with 1 kilogram of synthetic cannabis known as Colorado. Investigations revealed the truck initially carried flour from Lagos to Ekpoma, Edo State, before being loaded with the illicit consignments for N1.7 million.
Also in Edo State, NDLEA arrested Shaibu Yusuf on January 27 while attempting to transport 66 bags of skunk cannabis (792 kg) concealed in charcoal bags to Katsina. On January 28, supported by the Nigerian Army, operatives raided a cannabis farm at Ebora Camp, Ilushi, in Esan South East LGA, destroying 4,063.675 kg of skunk over 1.6 hectares while recovering 328 kg of processed cannabis and seeds. Four suspects were arrested: Jeremiah Nwodeh (46), Chukwudi Pius (33), Pius Ogaba (46), and Onora Kwene (35).
In Anambra State, NDLEA intercepted a cement truck at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, on January 28. The truck, heading to Nkpor, was found carrying 345.2 kg of skunk cannabis concealed in cement bags. Abum Okeke (42) was among the three occupants arrested.
In Ondo State, two suspects, Tunde Ogundele (39) and Soji Elegbelye (46), were arrested on January 26 in Eleyewo community, Akure North, in connection with 473 kg of skunk cannabis. On the same day in Kano, Abdullahi Usman (45) was apprehended on Murtala Mohammed Way with 12,500 ampoules of pentazocine injection, and another suspect, Musa Shuaibu (42), was arrested on January 27 in Gaya with 4,390 tramadol pills.
Further arrests include Oragwan Ekene, caught on January 30 at Okeyson Park, Alaba, Lagos, carrying 15.5 kg of skunk destined for Onitsha, Anambra State, and Omang Peter Edward, who was intercepted on January 27 at Seme border, Badagry, with 3.5 kg of cannabis concealed in a sound system and cereal packets.
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), NDLEA Chairman/CEO, commended the officers across MMIA, Tincan, Niger, Lagos, Edo, Anambra, Ondo, and Kano commands for their professionalism and effective operations. He urged all personnel to continue their balanced approach to drug supply and demand reduction efforts nationwide.
