Onwe urges Reps To Investigate UCTH CMD Before Any suspension.

Published

Chief Henry Onwe, Chairman of the Cross River State Businessmen’s Forum, has criticized the House of Representatives’ decision to suspend Prof. Ikpeme Ikpeme, Chief Medical Director of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), calling the move “hasty, harsh, and unrealistic.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Onwe urged lawmakers to first investigate the allegations against the CMD before considering any suspension. In a statement from Calabar, he stressed that the motion—filed by Mr. Iduma Igariwey of Afikpo North/Afikpo South Federal Constituency—was adopted without a proper probe into claims that the CMD showed ethnic bias in assigning medical graduates for housemanship.

He faulted the House for relying on media reports rather than conducting a thorough inquiry and hearing directly from the CMD, warning that acting on unverified allegations undermines natural justice and fairness. Onwe noted that evidence of any meeting between the affected house officers and Prof. Ikpeme is disputed and unsubstantiated.

The business leader also questioned why the House did not examine the posting process itself, including authorizations, criteria used, and the reported concentration of doctors at one federal institution, which he said could violate the federal character principle. He rejected claims that the CMD’s actions contributed to brain drain, pointing out that many doctors migrate abroad regardless of housemanship placements.

Onwe further noted that professional bodies such as the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) were not consulted, and that the doctors involved had already resumed training at UCTH before the suspension call. He defended Prof. Ikpeme’s record of inclusive appointments, citing the recent appointment of an Igbo woman as Head of Nursing Services.

He appealed to Cross River lawmakers to intervene, urging the House to revisit the motion, conduct a full investigation, and ensure due process, while calling on the Federal Government to suspend any action against the CMD pending proper inquiry.

A five-member panel of the court, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, announced that a date for the judgment would be communicated to the parties’ legal representatives.

Reacting to the development, Ememobong urged party members to remain calm and hopeful.

He noted that the Supreme Court has historically served as the final refuge for justice, expressing confidence that the judiciary would deliver a verdict that upholds multi-party democracy and prevents the emergence of a one-party system in Nigeria.

“The Court heard the appeals, with all parties adopting their respective processes, and thereafter reserved judgment to a date to be communicated to counsel.

“We urge all genuine and committed PDP members to remain steadfast in the belief that the apex court will deliver a judgment that safeguards multi-party democracy and averts any move toward a one-party state. The Supreme Court has, at different times in our democratic journey, stood as the last hope for Nigerians, even under intense pressure,” the statement read in part.

Psquare: If My Parents Were Alive And Supported The Betrayal I Would Cut Them Off – Peter Okoye.

Popular Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, widely known as Mr P, has dismissed the popular saying that “blood is thicker than water,” amid renewed tensions within his family.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Recall that the singer recently stirred reactions after announcing a change to his birthday, stating that it will now be celebrated on November 30 instead of November 18.

In a series of posts shared on his handle on Wednesday, Okoye suggested that his long-running feud with his brothers has resurfaced, declaring that his peace of mind takes precedence over family ties.

Mr P also refuted claims that his wife played any role in the renewed conflict, describing such narratives as false and misleading.

“Before you drag any woman into this! No woman directed or advised anyone to steal from what I worked for over the years. Stop pushing that narrative to suit your agenda,” he wrote.

He maintained that the issues within the family date back many years, long before any of them got married, insisting that the alleged betrayal and disputes are deeply rooted.

“None of us were even married 20-something years ago when this whole betrayal and stealing started! I said what I said,” he added.

The singer, who has previously accused unnamed individuals of betraying him, admitted that the situation has been emotionally draining but stressed his commitment to prioritising his mental wellbeing.

“Yes, it’s painful. And yes, it’s my loss. But no one should keep reminding me that I was betrayed and used by my own blood for over 20 years plus,” he said.

Reaffirming his stance, Okoye noted that he would still choose to distance himself, regardless of family pressure, emphasising the importance of setting personal boundaries.

“Even if my parents were alive and supported this kind of betrayal, I’d still choose to step back, cut them off and protect my peace. Boundaries are necessary! Blood isn’t thicker than my peace of mind,” he stated.

He further disclosed that the disagreement has escalated into a legal battle, indicating that the matter is currently before the court.

“Now that I’ve uncovered the betrayal that has been going on for over 20 years plus, suddenly we’re blood? No… it doesn’t work like that. We are still in court!” he added.
