“Court Order: Wike Seeks Jail Time For FCTA Workers On Strike”.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has petitioned the National Industrial Court to commit striking Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) workers to prison for defying a court order.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The workers resumed their strike despite an order issued on January 27, 2026, by Justice Emmanuel Danjuma Sublimi of the Industrial Court, which directed the strike to be suspended until the suit filed against them by the FCT Minister was resolved.
To enforce compliance, Wike’s legal team obtained Form 48, a court document detailing the consequences of disobeying the order. The notice, served on the striking workers by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Dr. Ogwu James Onoja on behalf of Wike, warns that failure to comply could result in contempt charges and imprisonment.
The Form 48, titled “Notice of Consequence of Disobedience of Court Order” and dated January 29, 2026, states:
“Take note that unless you obey the directions contained in the order of Honourable Justice E.D. Sublimi of the National Industrial Court delivered on 27th January 2026, you will be guilty of contempt of court and liable to imprisonment.”
The Industrial Court had previously held that all industrial actions, including strikes, must be suspended once a dispute is referred to the Court, citing Section 18(1)E of the Trade Dispute Act. Justice Sublimi emphasized that maintaining industrial peace serves the public interest, and non-compliance could attract sanctions.
Despite the order, four days later, the FCTA workers continued their strike, claiming the action was justified by an appeal filed at the Court of Appeal against the Industrial Court ruling. Wike’s legal team rejected this, stating that without a court stay, the workers had no legal basis to continue their industrial action.
The legal team noted, “Court orders are not made in vain. They are made to be obeyed for sanity to prevail in society.”
The substantive hearing of the case has been adjourned to March 25, 2026.
The strike, which began on January 19, 2026, shut down operations across FCTA secretariats, departments, agencies, area councils, and parastatals, as workers demanded fulfillment of what they described as “unmet demands” by the Federal Government.
