“$6.2M Vanished Under Emefiele, I Take Responsibility – CBN Staff”.
A Deputy Director in charge of Banking Supervision at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Malam Bashirudeen Maishanu, has admitted responsibility for the disappearance of $6.2 million from the apex bank during the tenure of former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Maishanu specifically took ownership of $2.5 million of the total sum, making the disclosure on Thursday while testifying at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja. He appeared as a prosecution witness in Emefiele’s ongoing trial over procurement-related charges.
Emefiele faces a 20-count amended charge, including criminal breach of trust, forgery, abuse of office, and obtaining money by false pretence. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alleges that he misappropriated the $6.23 million, which was meant for international election observers during the 2023 general election.
Maishanu told the court that he was “inadvertently involved” in the withdrawal of the funds, explaining that all instructions came from Emefiele’s personal assistant, Eric Ocheme. He said he did not meet with Emefiele directly or receive any cash from him, and only realized the transaction was fraudulent when confronted with forged signatures of then-President Muhammadu Buhari and the then SGF, Boss Mustapha.
“I accept personal responsibility for the disappearance of the $6.2 million. I was inadvertently involved, and Mr. Eric Ocheme, Emefiele’s PA, could not be reached. I had no idea it was a fraud until shown the documents,” Maishanu told the court.
He also revealed that he and a friend were handed $2.5 million from the withdrawn funds, part of which he has since refunded through the special investigative panel appointed by President Bola Tinubu. Maishanu confirmed that none of the $6.2 million was used for its intended purpose.
The former CBN governor, Emefiele, has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Justice Hamza Muazu adjourned the hearing until January 30 for the continuation of the trial.
