“From Civil Conflict to Full-Blown War: Ex-Minister Explains Collapse of Saraki’s Kwara Political Dynasty”

Published

A former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Bolaji Abdullahi, has described former Senate President Bukola Saraki’s 2018 defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a grave political error that accelerated the collapse of the Saraki political dynasty in Kwara State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Abdullahi shared this insight in his memoir, The Loyalist, which is set for public release on Tuesday. The 297-page book chronicles Abdullahi’s two decades in Nigerian politics, providing an insider account of significant events at both state and federal levels.

A long-time associate of Saraki and current spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Abdullahi reflects on the 2019 general elections that ended the Saraki family’s long-standing dominance in Kwara politics. Prior to that, Saraki had served eight years as governor and another eight years as senator, including a tenure as Senate President from 2015 to 2019.

Abdullahi noted that Saraki’s election as Senate President in 2015, achieved without the APC leadership’s support, sowed the seeds of persistent political tension. Saraki secured the position with backing from opposition senators, defying the party’s preference for Ahmad Lawan, which strained relations between the National Assembly and the Presidency throughout the 8th National Assembly.

He argued that Saraki’s 2018 defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) worsened the situation. Abdullahi observed that after the Supreme Court cleared Saraki of a false asset declaration case on July 6, 2018, he had a key opportunity to repair ties with the APC and the Presidency—but he failed to capitalize on it.

“By leaving the party, he turned what was essentially a civil conflict into a full-blown war with an adversary that had far superior firepower,” Abdullahi wrote.

He added that staying in the APC could have secured Saraki another term as Senate President. At the PDP presidential primary in 2018, Saraki lost the ticket to Atiku Abubakar, and his later bid for the Kwara Central senatorial seat ended in defeat to APC candidate Yahaya Oloriegbe.

Abdullahi highlighted that PDP gubernatorial candidate Abdulrazak Atunwa and most other PDP candidates also lost in 2019, paving the way for the success of the “O to ge” movement, which dismantled the Saraki political structure in Kwara.

According to Abdullahi, the 2019 elections marked the first time since 1979 that political leaders emerged in Kwara without the backing of Saraki. The APC’s continued dominance in the 2023 elections further cemented his absence from elective office and underscored the long-term consequences of his defection.
