Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Mefoh said the state suffers an estimated ₦8 billion loss every Monday due to the sit-at-home.

According to him, the government has a duty to keep the economy active, adding that those resisting the move are merely being mischievous.

“Let me emphasise that initially there was a fear factor, but that is no longer the case. For months and even years now, security has largely been restored in Anambra, so there is no longer any reason for fear,” he said.

“What happened was that the fear in the past led to markets being shut every Monday, and over time, traders turned Mondays into an extension of their weekend. This has seriously damaged the socio-economic life of the state.

“Statistics show that Anambra loses an average of ₦8 billion every Monday that markets remain closed.

“This is extremely serious. When you look at it from that perspective, you will understand that the government has a responsibility to ensure the economy keeps running, and those opposing it are simply being mischievous.”
