Why Tinubu Deserves Eight Years – Ex-IGP Okiro.

Okiro spoke with journalists on Sunday in Ibadan, Oyo State, noting that Tinubu took office amid significant national challenges and has steadily addressed them through carefully planned policy measures.
According to the former police chief, the President’s leadership has demonstrated exceptional boldness in tackling long-standing structural issues in the country. He highlighted that Tinubu’s cross-sector reforms, though initially challenging, are beginning to yield positive results and are expected to position Nigeria for sustainable growth by the end of his first term.
“President Tinubu has taken tough but necessary decisions. These reforms are starting to bear fruit, and over time, Nigerians will fully experience their benefits,” Okiro said.
He singled out the removal of the fuel subsidy as one of the administration’s most difficult decisions, acknowledging the initial hardships it caused but stressing its necessity for stabilizing the economy. “No Nigerian President in recent memory has governed with such courage. The subsidy removal was painful but essential, and the economy is gradually stabilizing,” he added.
Okiro urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive, noting that continued backing would allow the President to consolidate reforms and realize his long-term vision for the country. He also pointed to Tinubu’s track record as Lagos State governor as a clear indication of what the nation could expect if granted a full eight-year tenure.
“His achievements in Lagos reflect capacity, vision, and consistency, offering a glimpse of what Nigerians can anticipate after eight years,” he said.
On the issue of insecurity, Okiro expressed confidence that the ongoing security interventions under Tinubu’s leadership would significantly reduce criminal activities nationwide. He recalled his collaboration with Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos governor, attributing the state’s relative peace to a robust and well-coordinated security framework.
“I am confident that the current security strategies will curb insecurity and lower crime across the country,” Okiro stated.
Naija News reports that Okiro was in Ibadan to formally endorse Tinubu and inaugurate the Grassroots Mobilization for Tinubu. During the visit, he also paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Sarkin Sasa.
He was accompanied by leaders from youth and elders’ forums, including Alhaji Mahmud Sani-Yerima, National Coordinator of the Northern Youth and Elder’s Awareness Forum, along with other zonal coordinators.
The trial of Ali Bello, nephew of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello, was on Tuesday delayed at the Federal High Court in Abuja after his newly appointed defence counsel sought an adjournment.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
At the resumed hearing before Justice James Omotosho, defence counsel, Ahmed Raji (SAN), informed the court that he was only recently briefed on the matter and required time to properly study the case file.
He explained that the prosecution had already been informed of the development and pleaded for an adjournment to allow adequate preparation for the defence.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Bello, who currently serves as Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo.
He is standing trial alongside Dauda Sulaiman on an amended 16-count charge involving alleged misappropriation and money laundering of about ₦10.27 billion.
However, prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), objected to the adjournment request, arguing that proper legal procedure under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, was not followed.
He stated that the previous defence counsel, A.M. Aliyu (SAN), ought to have formally notified the court in advance regarding the change of counsel.
Despite the objection, Justice Omotosho granted the request in the interest of fair hearing.
The case was subsequently adjourned to May 5 and May 6, 2026, for continuation of the trial.
Bello and his co-defendant are accused of involvement in the alleged diversion of public funds running into billions of naira through questionable financial transactions, a case that has continued to attract public attention due to its political implications.

The delegation was led by the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, during a high-level engagement focused on development priorities in the state and the wider South-East region.
During the meeting, President Tinubu assured the stakeholders of continued federal attention to key infrastructure challenges, particularly in transport and power.
Addressing the delegation, he noted that major projects such as the Port Harcourt–Enugu rail line, ongoing power sector reforms, and other critical infrastructure needed for economic growth would receive greater attention from his administration.
Governor Mbah recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), a development that has continued to generate political reactions.
Meanwhile, the PDP has reacted to the wave of defections from its ranks to the APC, saying the affected governors and political leaders would soon regret their decisions.
The opposition party made the comment after the APC ruled out automatic tickets for defecting governors.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, accused the defectors of acting out of personal interest rather than the welfare of citizens, adding that their actions were not surprising.
He further stated that the APC does not truly value its members and described the situation as the beginning of regret for those who left the PDP.
Several governors, including those from Akwa Ibom, Delta, Enugu, Taraba, Rivers, and Kano States, alongside lawmakers and other political figures, have recently moved from the PDP to the APC.

News reports that Atiku made the remarks on Tuesday during a meeting with members of the Coalition for Democracy Movement, led by Jibril Shehu Mustapha, where discussions focused on improving electoral integrity and strengthening nationwide political coordination.
In a post shared on his handle, Atiku emphasised the importance of putting in place strong measures to prevent electoral manipulation.
He noted that the coalition presented details of its nationwide structure and reaffirmed its support for his political engagements, particularly efforts aimed at protecting votes and ensuring a credible electoral process.
Atiku expressed appreciation for the group’s backing, commending their consistency and assuring them that their sacrifices and contributions would be remembered.
He wrote that he drew attention to increasing concerns about manipulation during elections, especially at collation centres, stressing the need for effective safeguards while thanking the coalition for its continued support.
He further assured the group that their efforts in defending democracy would not be forgotten and would be recognized in history.
