Kwankwaso Can’t Clinch Presidential Ticket – Keyamo Spells Out Ex-Gov’s Options.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has said former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has pushed himself into a political corner, leaving him with limited options ahead of the 2027 general election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued on Sunday, Keyamo attributed Kwankwaso’s predicament to what he described as hesitation or failure to embrace an earlier overture from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The minister noted that while he had long admired Kwankwaso from afar, recent political shifts had significantly shrunk the former governor’s pathways, largely due to his presidential ambition.

“Kwankwaso wants to be President, but none of the major political parties will present him as their candidate in 2027,” Keyamo said.

He explained that both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are likely to zone their presidential tickets to the South, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket, according to him, is firmly within Atiku Abubakar’s grasp. He also stressed that only a major political party stands a realistic chance of winning Nigeria’s presidency.

Keyamo further described the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as a “one-state party,” warning that its influence in Kano could erode before 2027, especially following recent defections, including that of the state governor.

“A leader is only as strong as his loyal lieutenants,” he added.

According to the minister, Kwankwaso would be unwilling to back a northern presidential candidate in 2027, as doing so would effectively end his own ambition.

“Supporting a northern candidate would close the door on his presidential aspiration,” Keyamo said, noting that waiting another 16 years for power rotation would be unrealistic. He added that this reality rules out any Atiku–Kwankwaso alliance in 2027.

Keyamo argued that 2031 appears to be Kwankwaso’s most viable shot at the presidency, but warned that the alliances he forms in 2027 would determine his relevance by then.

“If he loses his grip on Kano in 2027, his influence going into 2031 will be severely weakened,” he said.

The minister outlined Kwankwaso’s realistic alliance options as the PDP, APC and Labour Party, noting that each presents significant hurdles.

On the PDP, Keyamo said a return was possible under certain conditions, but zoning the ticket to the South would stall Kwankwaso’s ambition until 2031 and likely spell the end of the NNPP.

Regarding the APC, he said the ruling party no longer desperately needs Kwankwaso, particularly with key NNPP figures defecting in Kano, adding that joining the APC would also mean shelving presidential ambitions until 2031.

“The APC cannot sacrifice its entire structure in Kano for Kwankwaso,” he stated.

On the Labour Party, Keyamo said the option was even narrower, noting that Kwankwaso would neither accept nor be accepted as a vice-presidential candidate to Peter Obi in 2027.

He added that Kwankwaso’s supporters would not endorse an extended southern presidency.

Keyamo concluded that Kwankwaso is at a defining crossroads in his political career.

“The choice he makes now could either end his political journey or revive his presidential ambition,” he said, warning that without a strategic alliance with a major party, Kwankwaso risks remaining a “local champion” whose influence may continue to wane amid the NNPP’s current challenges.

This call was issued through a 10-point communiqué following a three-day Ministers of the Gospel Conference held at the CAN Secretariat along FGGC Road in Jalingo. The gathering, themed “The Roles of the Church and the State in Advancing God’s Purpose in a Changing World,” brought together diverse leaders, including bishops, pastors, traditional rulers, politicians, and delegates from across the state’s 16 local government areas and two development areas.

Key Highlights from the Communiqué

  • Complementary Roles: Signed by Taraba CAN Chairman Rev. Fr. Williams P. Awoshiri and Conference Working Committee Chairman Bishop (Dr.) Innocent R. Solomon, the document emphasizes that the church and government hold distinct yet mutually supportive responsibilities in nation-building, with the church focusing on moral guidance and human dignity, and the government handling security and infrastructure.

  • Leadership and Governance: Christian political officeholders were urged to treat their positions as avenues for service rather than personal gain, mirroring biblical figures of integrity. Meanwhile, churches were encouraged to provide moral leadership without getting entangled in partisan politics.

  • Church-State Relations & Traditional Institutions: CAN stressed the importance of mutual respect, constitutional independence, and constructive collaboration, suggesting that churches expand their support in areas like education and healthcare while retaining the right to speak truth to power. The association also called for traditional rulers to be actively involved in grassroots policymaking.

  • Unity and Conflict Resolution: Acknowledging Taraba’s multi-ethnic landscape, CAN urged church leaders to bridge denominational divides and take active roles in early-intervention peacebuilding and traditional dispute resolution to forestall communal conflicts.
