Sunday Oliseh Slams Super Eagles’ Celebration After AFCON Bronze.
Former Super Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh, has criticised Nigeria’s national team for celebrating their third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing the reaction as a worrying sign for Nigerian football.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Oliseh warned that excessive celebration of a bronze medal encourages a mindset of mediocrity and lowers the standards once associated with the Super Eagles.
His remarks followed Nigeria’s 4–2 penalty shootout win over Egypt in the third-place playoff match held in Morocco last weekend. Although the victory earned Nigeria a record ninth AFCON bronze medal, Oliseh said he was surprised by the scale of the celebrations, especially considering the team’s historical ambitions.
Speaking on the Global Football Insight Podcast, the former international recalled that football analysts from Africa and Europe openly ridiculed the celebrations.
“Before the AFCON final in Rabat, a video surfaced showing our Super Eagles players celebrating wildly after finishing third against Egypt,” Oliseh said. “From the media tribune, I watched as pundits from Africa and Europe mocked us. They simply couldn’t understand it.”
Oliseh also reflected on the shift in mentality within the national team over the years, noting that past Super Eagles squads held themselves to much higher expectations.
“There was a time when players cried after finishing second at the AFCON,” he added. “Back then, anything short of winning the trophy was seen as failure. Celebrating third place only entrenches a culture of mediocrity.”
