Why Rivers Lawmakers Rejected All Fubara’s Peace Efforts — Ijaw Youth Leader.

Published

President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Alaye Tari Theophilus, has alleged that the Rivers State House of Assembly members are deliberately working to undermine Governor Siminalayi Fubara because they want access to the state’s treasury.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Arise Television on Friday, Theophilus claimed the lawmakers have consistently turned down all peace efforts because Governor Fubara refused to grant them unrestricted access to public funds.

According to him, the core of the Rivers political crisis is the governor’s decision to block what he described as lawmakers’ expectations of financial patronage.

“The main issue is that Governor Fubara has refused to open the Rivers treasury to them,” he said. “They rejected every peace initiative by the Ijaw Youth Council and other stakeholders because they believe the governor is too stingy and unwilling to allow them benefit.”

He explained that the IYC had engaged elders, community leaders and stakeholders from the affected constituencies in an attempt to mediate, but the efforts failed due to the lawmakers’ demands.

Theophilus further alleged that a growing trend in Nigerian politics has turned legislators into contractors and businessmen who seek direct allocations from state coffers beyond their constituency projects in order to fund lavish lifestyles.

He said Governor Fubara, however, has taken a different approach, insisting that state funds must be used strictly for the benefit of Rivers people.

“The governor has made it clear that if what they want is access to the treasury, he will not agree. But if they are interested in good governance, then he is ready to work with them,” he added.

The IYC president stressed that the governor’s refusal to release public funds for personal or political gain is at the heart of the dispute, noting that Fubara remains focused on infrastructure development, human capital growth and accountable governance.
