Pension Fraud Convict Maina Allegedly Bags NBA Award.

Published

Abdulrasheed Maina, the former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms who was convicted over the diversion of more than ₦2 billion in pension funds, has resurfaced publicly after receiving an award from the Garki Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Maina, who was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment in 2021, was honoured on Thursday with the Rule of Law and Courage Award at an event held on Jimmy Carter Street, Asokoro. He appeared at the ceremony wearing a muffler inscribed “Patron, NBA Garki Branch.”

During the event, Maina called for a renewed investigation into a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, alleging that further recovery of public funds could be made if he is thoroughly probed.

Addressing attendees, Maina claimed that Malami—who is currently facing money laundering charges alongside his wife and son—was not properly investigated during the previous administration. He further alleged that certain actions taken at the time would not occur under the current government.

Malami is standing trial alongside his wife and son over alleged money laundering offences. The trio was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), initially remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre, later granted bail, and subsequently rearrested by the Department of State Services.

Despite his conviction, Maina denied any wrongdoing, insisting that his prosecution was orchestrated by powerful individuals within the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He also claimed that after jumping bail, he was flown out of Nigeria on a government aircraft for medical treatment, only to later be arrested in Niger Republic and accused of evading justice.

Background To Maina’s Conviction

Maina was appointed in 2010 by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan to oversee pension reforms, including the biometric verification of pensioners.

According to the EFCC, he laundered billions of naira through fraudulent contracts, fictitious bank accounts, and proxy companies, including Common Input Property and Investment Ltd, which was convicted alongside him and ordered to be wound up.

During the trial, three of Maina’s siblings testified against him, alleging that their personal details were used to open bank accounts linked to the fraud.

In November 2021, Justice Okon Abang sentenced Maina to eight years’ imprisonment for money laundering involving ₦2 billion in pension funds, describing his conduct toward pensioners as marked by “disdain and levity,” and noting that some victims died while awaiting their entitlements.

The Court of Appeal later upheld the conviction, while Maina’s son, Faisal, was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment in a related case. In 2024, a final court ruling ordered the forfeiture of 23 properties linked to Maina to the Federal Government.

It remains unclear when Maina was released from prison. However, a close associate told Premium Times that he quietly completed his sentence and returned home in February 2025 based on correctional service calculations.

Thursday’s appearance marked one of Maina’s first public outings since his release.

FERMA’s South-East 2 Zonal Director, Suleiman Mohammed Omonowo, issued the warning during an inspection of the project, cautioning against the burning of tyres during celebrations, which he said could damage the road surface.

He noted that destructive practices by some youths and community members often contribute to the early failure of road projects across the country.

“Our advice to road users, especially indigenes, is to protect the road from destruction. Let nobody come and destroy it or burn tyres in the name of celebration,” he said.

Omonowo said the Aba–Azumini highway was previously in a very bad condition before FERMA intervened, describing it as a death trap for commuters and residents.

He also expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done on the project, adding that drainage structures such as catch pits would help prevent flooding and extend the lifespan of the road.

According to him, the highway serves as a major link between Aba, several Abia communities, and Cross River State, carrying heavy traffic daily.

He urged local construction firms to improve on quality delivery to compete effectively with foreign contractors.

Meanwhile, the Federal Roads Maintenance Engineer in Abia State, Festus Okafor, said FERMA workers have not faced harassment or violence from residents during operations in the state.

Court Orders UI To Reinstate Students Suspended Over Fee Hike Protest.

Published

The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has ordered the University of Ibadan (UI) to reinstate three students suspended over their participation in a protest against tuition fee hikes.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Nkeonye Maha set aside the decision of the university’s Central Student Disciplinary Committee, ruling that the students were denied fair hearing during the disciplinary process.

The court held that the failure to allow the students call witnesses and present evidence violated their constitutional right to fair hearing, rendering the sanctions against them invalid.

The affected students — Aduwo Ayodele, Mide Gbadegesin, and Nice Linus — were suspended on July 14, 2025, after taking part in a protest against increased school fees approved by the university’s governing council.

Dissatisfied with the suspension, they approached the court, arguing that the disciplinary proceedings breached their fundamental rights and due process.

They asked the court to quash the suspension, reinstate their studentship, and award damages for alleged rights violations.

In her ruling, Justice Maha agreed with their arguments, stating that the university’s actions failed to meet the standards of natural justice.

Following the judgment, rights group CAPPA hailed the decision, urging the university to comply fully, reinstate the students, and issue an apology.

The group said the ruling reinforces constitutional protections for freedom of expression and serves as a warning against the suppression of student protests in tertiary institutions.
