Nigerian Bar Association Rejects Abdulrasheed Maina’s ‘Patron’ Status, Launches Disciplinary Probe.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has rejected the appointment of former Pension Task Force Chairman Abdulrasheed Maina as patron of its Garki branch in Abuja and announced a disciplinary probe into the branch officials responsible.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Naija News reports that the Garki branch had honoured Maina on Thursday at an event on Jimmy Carter Street, Asokoro, presenting him as patron and awarding him the “Rule of Law and Courage” accolade. Maina, who once led the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, was convicted and jailed for embezzling over ₦2 billion meant for pensioners.

At the ceremony, Maina wore a scarf denoting his patron status, a move that sparked public outrage given his criminal record and long-running legal cases linked to pension fraud.

In a statement signed by NBA President Mazi Osigwe on Friday, the national body clarified it was not involved in Maina’s appointment and condemned the decision of Garki branch chairman Anthony Ojo. The NBA said the move tarnished the image of the legal profession and undermined Nigeria’s fight against corruption.

The association directed Ojo to immediately withdraw the appointment and refrain from issuing statements or acting in support of Maina or any individual with ongoing court cases. It emphasized that any action appearing to defend or promote a convicted person violates the Bar’s principles and erodes public trust in the justice system.

At the event, Maina addressed national issues, calling for fresh investigations into former Attorney General Abubakar Malami and denying allegations of embezzlement, claiming he was targeted by powerful figures in the previous government.

Maina was appointed in 2010 under the Goodluck Jonathan administration to reform the pension system, including biometric verification to eliminate ghost workers. Instead, the EFCC later accused him of laundering billions through fake accounts and relatives. Family members testified against him during trial, confirming the misuse of their personal information to commit the fraud.

After fleeing Nigeria in 2013, Maina was declared wanted and later extradited from Niger Republic in 2019. In November 2021, a Federal High Court sentenced him to eight years in prison, ordered the closure of his company, and seized his properties. By 2024, all 23 properties linked to him were forfeited to the government. He was quietly released in early 2025, with the NBA event marking one of his first public appearances post-release.

The NBA reiterated that integrity, discipline, and respect for the law remain central to its values and pledged strict action against members whose conduct undermines the profession.

The state Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, disclosed that the suspect and the deceased initially connected online and developed a friendship after communicating for several months.

According to Daaor, Samuel later invited the woman to his residence in the Ahor area of Benin City, where he allegedly stabbed her to death with a knife.

The police commissioner stated that the suspect had been taken into custody and would be charged in court after investigations were concluded.

However, Samuel has offered a different account of the incident, claiming that the woman was injured during a struggle over a knife following an argument between them.

Speaking in an interview, the 21-year-old insisted that he did not intend to kill her.

“I didn’t mean to kill her, but she got injured in the process of struggling with her for the knife during an argument,” he said.

The suspect explained that he had met the woman on social media and that their friendship developed over several months of online conversations before she decided to visit him.

He said they were initially having a discussion at his residence, but the conversation eventually escalated into an argument.

“On the day she came to my house, we were discussing, but the discussion snowballed into an argument. In the process, she picked up a knife and intended to stab me,” he claimed.

Samuel further alleged that the woman sustained an injury to her neck while they were struggling over the knife.

He maintained that he attempted to save her after she was injured but was unable to prevent her death.

“I didn’t mean to kill her. I tried to save her after she was injured, but she died,” he said.

The police are expected to conclude their investigation before proceeding with the case in court.
