Edo Airline Move Triggers Fresh PDP Criticism.

Published

on

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised plans by the Monday Okpebholo-led administration to establish a state-owned airline, describing the proposal as a misplaced priority and a clear sign of poor governance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on Friday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, the PDP said the plan reflected an administration out of touch with the immediate needs of Edo residents.

The opposition party argued that floating an airline was impractical and insensitive, especially as the state grapples with failing infrastructure, deteriorating urban conditions and several abandoned or stalled projects.

“Operating an airline is highly capital-intensive, technically complex and has historically ended in failure for most sub-national governments in Nigeria,” the party said.

The PDP maintained that such a venture would demand huge financial commitments, constant subsidies and strong managerial capacity, which it claimed the current government lacks.

The party also decried the state of Benin City, noting that the capital no longer reflects the standard of a modern city.

“Many roads in the metropolis are nearly impassable, urban planning has broken down, drainage systems are neglected, and basic municipal services are either weak or non-existent,” the statement said, describing the situation as shameful for a city of Benin’s heritage and potential.

The PDP further accused the administration of neglecting key projects inherited from previous governments, citing the Museum of West African Art, Radisson Hotel, Ossiomo power project and EdoGIS as initiatives that have stalled or lost momentum.

According to the party, the setbacks undermine development, job creation, revenue growth and investor confidence in the state.

The opposition also faulted the flyover projects at Ramat Park and Adesuwa Junction, arguing that they are costly projects that fail to tackle Edo’s fundamental infrastructural challenges.

It insisted that the state needs broad-based road rehabilitation, effective drainage, traffic management and urban renewal, rather than what it termed “headline-grabbing projects.”

Against this background, the PDP described the airline proposal as a distraction with no sound economic basis.

“When roads are barely passable, public transportation is disorganised, healthcare facilities are overstretched and schools lack basic amenities, proposing an airline reflects poor judgment,” the party said.

The PDP urged the state government to channel its limited resources into areas with direct impact on residents, including roads, drainage and flood control, education, healthcare, power and water supply, security and job creation.

“Edo State does not need an airline to soar above its challenges. It needs a government willing to tackle them directly on the ground,” the statement added.

The party called on the Okpebholo-led administration to shelve the airline plan and concentrate on what it described as realistic, people-focused development priorities, warning that anything short of this would deepen public perception of a government lacking direction, competence and a clear development agenda.

The APC said the claim was a deliberate attempt to create confusion and damage the image of the party, stressing that no recognised structure within the party in Kano had taken such a decision.

It further stated that the so-called group does not represent the views or interests of APC members in the state and is not recognised within the party hierarchy.

Mahdi Shehu Faults Terrorists’ Rehabilitation, Says It Disrespects Victims.

Published

Public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has criticised ongoing government efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate former insurgents and convicted criminals, describing the policy as one that undermines victims and law-abiding citizens.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a post on his verified X handle on Friday, Shehu argued that the primary duty of the state is to enforce the law strictly, maintain order, and protect lives and property without compromise.

He stated that forgiveness of offenders, in his view, belongs to God and not government institutions.

According to him, “It is the prerogative of God to forgive offenders, sinners and other murderers on judgement day.”

Shehu also faulted various rehabilitation and amnesty programmes for ex-militants and insurgents over the years, including members of Boko Haram and ISWAP, saying such policies risk sending the wrong signal to society.

He cited reports that over 700 repentant insurgents recently completed de-radicalisation training and are being prepared for reintegration into communities, questioning the wisdom of returning them to areas they previously attacked.

Shehu warned that such decisions could anger victims’ families and potentially encourage criminal behaviour among unemployed youths who may see similar treatment as an incentive.

He concluded that the policy reflects what he described as a troubling imbalance in the justice system.
