Daddy Freeze To Wizkid: Don’t Compare Yourself To Fela Unless You Challenge Govt.

Published

Media personality Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze, has rejected attempts to equate Grammy-winning singer Wizkid with the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, insisting the comparison is misplaced.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Naija News reports that in a video shared online, Daddy Freeze argued that Fela’s legacy extends far beyond music, making it inappropriate to judge him solely by commercial success or popularity.

According to him, Wizkid can only be mentioned in the same breath as Fela if he is willing to confront government authority and actively fight for civil liberties, as the Afrobeat pioneer did.

He stressed that Fela was not merely an entertainer but a committed activist and philanthropist whose music was inseparable from his political struggle.

“Until Wizkid is ready to stand up and stone government, he shouldn’t compare himself to Fela. Fela was released from prison just to prevent him from dying there. They let him go home because his death in custody would have caused an uproar,” Daddy Freeze said.

He added that Fela’s influence lay in his fearless opposition to oppression, noting that his activism and music were deeply intertwined and could not be separated.

Naija News recalls that the controversy began after Seun Kuti dismissed comparisons between Wizkid and his father, arguing that claims of Wizkid being “bigger” or “more influential” diminish Fela’s historical significance.

Seun maintained that Fela’s impact as a political and cultural revolutionary transcends musical achievements, and criticised Wizkid’s fans for repeatedly invoking his father’s name in online debates, which he described as disrespectful.

While acknowledging Wizkid’s success in the music industry, Seun questioned why there was a need to place him above Fela, warning that such arguments reflect a poor understanding of history.

He also objected to Wizkid’s use of the nickname “Big Bird,” saying it had long been associated with him.

In response, Wizkid later took to Instagram to state that he does not accept comparisons with Fela, adding that while he respects the legend, he considers himself bigger only in terms of contemporary success.
