The Managing Director and CEO of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Akintunde Sawyerr, has revealed that since the launch of the student loan scheme in May 2024, the Federal Government has disbursed ₦174 billion to over 800,000 students across 263 tertiary institutions.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Tuesday at a sensitisation programme organised by the Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, Sawyerr urged Nigerian youths to take advantage of the scheme, describing education as a vital tool for personal growth and national development.

He explained that over ₦100 billion of the funds have been paid directly to institutions for school fees, while about ₦70 billion has been released to students as monthly upkeep, with each beneficiary receiving ₦20,000 per month throughout the academic session.

“As of today, ₦174 billion has been disbursed to more than 800,000 students. Over ₦100 billion went directly to institutions, and about ₦70 billion was paid to students as monthly upkeep—₦20,000 per month,” he said.

Sawyerr noted that the demand for the loan is high, with the fund receiving 6,000 to 7,000 applications daily. “In the last 24 hours alone, we received 6,000 applications. So far, 263 universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education have benefited, with funds paid directly into their accounts,” he added.

On the purpose of the scheme, Sawyerr said it reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring that no Nigerian is denied access to quality tertiary education due to financial constraints.

“Education is one of President Tinubu’s top priorities. He believes it is the greatest weapon against poverty and does not want any Nigerian to be deprived of quality tertiary education due to lack of funds. That is why NELFUND was established,” he said.

He encouraged students in government-owned tertiary institutions to apply for the loan, noting that NELFUND covers school fees and provides monthly upkeep to support living expenses.

Highlighting the importance of investing in young people, Sawyerr added, “Over 70% of Nigeria’s population is under 35. Equipping them with education—academic or vocational—will build an educated population capable of driving development and attracting investment. This is the strongest form of sustainability we can achieve.”

The Rector of the Ogun State Institute of Technology, Dr Abiodun Oluseye, praised President Tinubu for the unprecedented investment in expanding access to tertiary education. He noted that more than 200 students of the institution have already benefited from the loan, with over 400 applications received for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Oluseye urged students to take full advantage of the scheme, calling it a pathway to securing their future.

Oba Nosiru Teslim Olayemi, the Olodan of Odan Abuja-Sule, representing the Olu of Ilaro, also commended the Federal Government, saying NELFUND would ease the financial burden on parents and students. He advised beneficiaries to stay focused on their studies and avoid distractions.

Naija News recalls that NELFUND, launched in May 2024, provides interest-free loans for Nigerian students in tertiary institutions, with repayment expected to begin two years after graduation and upon securing employment.
