According to Aliyu, after being invited to Abuja for a meeting with Obasanjo through then-EFCC Chairman Nuhu Ribadu, he was subsequently directed to meet an individual who offered him the multi-million naira sum, which he rejected. Aliyu further alleged that similar heavy financial inducements were dangled before other principal officers, claiming former Speaker Aminu Masari and former Majority Leader Abdul Ningi were each offered ₦400 million, while lower-ranking lawmakers allegedly received offers starting at ₦50 million. He also credited figures like Muhammadu Buhari, Atiku Abubakar, and George Akume with helping to defeat the bid before the National Assembly formally rejected the constitutional amendments in May 2006.
