Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Thursday inaugurated the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, which had not been active for 15 years, with the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, appointed as its first chairman. Governor Makinde stated that the chairmanship of the council will rotate among the Olubadan, the Alaafin, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, with each monarch serving a two-year term. He said this arrangement was intended to promote unity, harmony, and cooperation among the state’s traditional institutions.

However, the Alaafin’s media aide, Bode Durojaye, countered Makinde’s statement, saying no meeting occurred between the governor and the three monarchs regarding the rotational leadership. The palace clarified that the Alaafin never endorsed the rotational arrangement and had previously communicated the state’s position through a memo from the Oyo Council of Elders.

The inauguration comes amid rumors of a feud between the Alaafin and Oba Ladoja, fueled by a viral video showing the two monarchs seemingly avoiding each other during a public function. Oba Ladoja, however, dismissed these claims, saying there is no tension and that the social media narrative is a misunderstanding.

During the inauguration, Oba Ladoja urged the public to view the council as a platform for collective governance rather than individual competition. He emphasized that the council’s role is to ensure peace and safety in their domains while contributing to the state’s progress.

Governor Makinde reiterated the importance of the council, noting that traditional institutions are vital partners in governance and community development. He described the inauguration as a step toward strengthening these institutions after years of inactivity.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, highlighted the council’s role in promoting cultural preservation, communal harmony, and socio-economic development.

Oba Ladoja also addressed claims that he had snubbed the Alaafin at a recent interfaith gathering, explaining that his actions were misinterpreted due to seating arrangements and late arrival. He stressed there is no conflict and affirmed his commitment to unity and progress within Oyo’s traditional institutions.

Party leadership has confirmed that work on the submitted results is complete, and the final list of candidates is being prepared for upload to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal. A senior official and member of the National Working Committee (NWC), speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated that no changes to the results are being considered, noting that the official timeline for primaries and appeals has already elapsed.

Response to Petitions

While many aggrieved aspirants—particularly from states like Lagos, Delta, Zamfara, Kogi, Rivers, Plateau, and Osun—have demanded fresh primaries, the party maintains that most of these complaints are without merit.

  • Frivolous Claims: According to party officials, reports from the election appeal panels found that many petitions were “frivolous” or centered on issues outside the scope of the primary process, such as pre-primary zoning disputes or candidate clearance concerns.

  • Limited Impact: The party noted that the vast majority of the 109 senatorial districts and 360 House of Representatives constituencies did not record any appeals, and valid appeals did not significantly alter the primary outcomes.

Impact on Candidates

The primaries, held between May 16 and 18, saw at least 54 serving federal lawmakers lose their bids for return tickets. As the party awaits the release of INEC access codes for its nomination portal, the leadership remains firm that the announced results are final and that no further review will be conducted.
