Govt Official: Attempt Made To Remove Speaker From Office.

Published

The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, failed to reconvene plenary on Thursday, exactly one week after adjourning its last session.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The development has heightened political tensions in the state, coming shortly after the Assembly moved to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct.

During last Thursday’s sitting, the House cited multiple allegations against the governor and his deputy, including the demolition of the Assembly complex and unauthorized expenditure, as justification for the impeachment process. The Clerk of the Assembly was instructed to serve an impeachment notice to Governor Fubara, giving him seven days to respond. Plenary was then adjourned to Thursday, January 15, 2026.

However, when reporters visited the Assembly on Thursday, there was no sign of a plenary session. Lawmakers were largely absent, and no official explanation was provided for the failure to reconvene.

A senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, mocked the lawmakers’ actions, suggesting their conduct was more appropriate for the film industry than for governance.

“The other time, they gave the governor one week to respond to allegations, and now they are acting like Nollywood players,” the official said. “I don’t even know why they are in politics instead of making films.”

The official also addressed circulating rumours of an attempted impeachment of Speaker Amaewhule, suggesting this may have contributed to the Assembly’s failure to resume.

“What I heard, though I’m not close to the Assembly members, is that there was an attempt to remove Speaker Amaewhule today. I think he caught wind of it and chose not to reconvene the House,” he said.

He warned that such political manoeuvring could backfire, adding, “An animal that removes itself from a trap is still in the bush. Let’s see how far they can run. If that is true, the hunter has become the hunted.”

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

The cleric had earlier this week publicly invited proposals for her marriage, setting conditions that included the suitor being young and in good physical and mental health, alongside promised financial support and housing benefits.

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
