“Flashback: When Obasanjo’s Son Backed Buhari Against His Father’s Position”.
In a move that has sparked political discussion, Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu for re-election in 2027.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The announcement, made on Thursday night, has drawn significant attention due to the longstanding rivalry between Tinubu and Atiku, who were once political allies before becoming national opponents.
Known popularly as Abba, the younger Atiku not only expressed support for Tinubu but also declared his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He directed members and coordinators of the Haske Atiku Organisation, the political structure mobilised for his father during the 2023 general election, to immediately join the APC and back the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Abba stated, “I am formally announcing my exit from my former party, where we worked in 2023, and my decision to join the APC. With this development, I will work to support the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.”
Political Irony and Family Contrasts
Observers have noted the irony in the development, citing it as an example of the adage that politics has no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests. The move mirrors a similar episode before the 2019 general election, when Olujonwo Obasanjo, son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, publicly endorsed Muhammadu Buhari despite his father’s vocal opposition to Buhari’s re-election bid.
At that time, former President Obasanjo had urged Nigerians to vote against Buhari, a stance his son openly rejected. In a two-page letter released during the 2019 campaign, Olujonwo Obasanjo highlighted what he described as Buhari’s achievements and argued that continuity was in Nigeria’s best interest.
He wrote, “The current administration has laid a solid foundation for future generations, addressing complex national challenges with deeply considered plans and policies. While the process is not without difficulty, it is important to recognize the progress made—from empowering local farmers, industrialists, women, SMEs, and businessmen, to reviving industries such as steel, and improving infrastructure and refineries.”
He continued, “The government has invested in education, health, agriculture, security, and roads, providing hope to the common citizen. No human or government is perfect, but the path charted by the current administration is commendable. I call on the youths of our nation to support Buhari’s leadership and ensure continuity for the nation’s growth and development.”
