Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on Nigerians and governments at all levels to intensify their support for the Nigerian Armed Forces in recognition of the immense sacrifices they continue to make to preserve the unity of the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The governor made the appeal on Thursday at the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Museum Ground, Oba Ovonramwen Square, Benin City. The annual event was organised to honour military personnel who lost their lives in the service of the nation.

Okpebholo described the day as a solemn moment set aside to remember fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price for the survival and cohesion of Nigeria. He stressed that their sacrifices must never be forgotten and offered prayers for the families they left behind, urging them to remain strong in the face of their loss.

He further noted that the nation has a responsibility to continually recognise and honour both serving and fallen military personnel who have shown unwavering dedication in the line of duty. The governor also encouraged officers still in active service to remain resolute and committed to the defence of the country.

Expressing optimism about Nigeria’s future, Okpebholo said the country would remain strong if greater value is placed on the contributions of those who risk their lives daily to protect it.

At the event, the Edo State Coordinator of the Military Widows Association, Umar Sheriffat, appealed for sustained government support for widows of fallen soldiers. She explained that many of the widows were left with the burden of raising children alone following the death of their spouses in active service.

Sheriffat urged authorities to formally recognise military widows and implement empowerment programmes that would enable them to become self-reliant and adequately cater for their families.

Also speaking, retired Nigerian Army officer, Major Joe Koma, called on the government to improve welfare packages for retired military personnel. He said enhanced benefits for retirees would serve as motivation for officers still serving in active duty.

Koma acknowledged that pensions were being paid but stressed the need for better welfare provisions in view of the risks and sacrifices soldiers made while serving the nation.

The ceremony concluded with prayers and tributes in honour of military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.
