‘A Friend Of A Thief Is A Thief’: Defence Minister Fires Warning At Sheikh Gumi, Others.
According to Nivo News, the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has issued a strong warning to Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmed Gumi and other individuals accused of showing sympathy toward terrorists and bandits, urging them to immediately desist from offering any form of support to criminal elements undermining national security.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during an official visit to Maiduguri on Wednesday, the Defence Minister cautioned that terrorism and banditry must never be justified on the basis of ethnic, religious, or regional affiliations. He stressed that criminal acts remain crimes regardless of the narrative used to explain or excuse them, noting that such justifications only weaken the collective fight against insecurity.
Musa emphasized that Nigerians must reject any rhetoric that normalizes or legitimizes criminal behaviour, declaring that anyone who aligns themselves with criminals, directly or indirectly, shares responsibility for their actions. He warned that portraying bandits or terrorists as misunderstood members of society only emboldens their operations and prolongs the suffering of affected communities.
The Minister’s remarks were widely seen as a response to previous comments by Sheikh Gumi, who had described bandits as “our brothers” and suggested that their existence was unavoidable. Musa clarified that while compassion for victims of violence is necessary, it must never translate into excusing or defending those responsible for bloodshed and destruction.
He further noted that terrorism is sustained not only through weapons and logistics but also through moral, verbal, and psychological support. According to him, individuals who defend, excuse, or remain silent in the face of criminality contribute to the continued spread of insecurity and must be held accountable.
Musa concluded by reaffirming that Nigeria’s battle against terrorism and banditry cannot succeed if the distinction between victims and perpetrators is blurred. He insisted that neutrality is unacceptable in matters of national security, urging citizens to clearly align themselves with the law and the nation rather than narratives that enable criminal activities.
