Students Detained, Criminals Free? Opposition Raises Alarm Over Ekpoma.

Published

on

A fresh wave of political tension has followed recent events in Ekpoma, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accusing the Edo State government of prioritising political interests over the safety and welfare of citizens.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the PDP described the arrest of students and protesters in Ekpoma as a troubling response to public demonstrations against insecurity, arguing that the government’s actions reflected a deeper concern for political symbolism rather than the protection of lives.

The party maintained that the forceful arrest and detention of students came not in response to kidnapping or violent crime, but allegedly over claims that campaign billboards linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were interfered with during the protest. It argued that this response exposed what it described as misplaced priorities within the state’s leadership.

The PDP questioned why swift action was taken against students and protesters while criminal elements accused of kidnapping and killings in Ekpoma were yet to face decisive consequences. It insisted that the protest was driven by genuine fear and frustration over rising insecurity and the killing of a youth in the community.

The opposition party further alleged that the government’s handling of the situation was politically motivated, accusing the administration of attempting to impress party leaders at the national level through aggressive enforcement tactics rather than addressing the root causes of insecurity.

Reacting to statements credited to leaders of the ruling party in the state, the PDP described attempts to link opposition figures to violence as dangerous and capable of undermining democratic freedoms. It warned that branding dissent and peaceful protest as criminal acts threatens civil liberties and erodes public trust.

The party also criticised what it described as intimidation tactics against opposition voices, noting that condemning calls for the release of detained students amounted to suppressing legitimate democratic expression.

According to the PDP, the failure to centre discussions on the victims of violence and insecurity, while focusing instead on political imagery, highlights a growing disconnect between the government and the people it serves.

The party cautioned that governance driven by electoral calculations rather than compassion and accountability could further alienate citizens and deepen public resentment.

It concluded that while arrests and public statements may silence voices temporarily, they cannot erase the grievances of affected communities, stressing that the unfolding events in Ekpoma have intensified scrutiny of the government’s priorities and commitment to human security.
