Gov Aiyedatiwa Grants Freedom To Seven Inmates To Mark 61st Birthday.
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has granted an unconditional pardon to seven inmates serving various sentences in correctional facilities across the state, exercising his constitutional prerogative of mercy. According to Nivo News, the gesture was approved to commemorate the governor’s 61st birthday and to build on the broader clemency initiative earlier introduced during the 2026 New Year celebrations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The state government explained that the decision forms part of the Aiyedatiwa administration’s ongoing efforts to reform the justice system while promoting compassion and humane governance. The governor had previously approved the release of 77 inmates on January 1, 2026, following recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, it was disclosed that the seven newly pardoned inmates were selected after a thorough review process. The assessment reportedly considered factors such as demonstrated remorse, good behaviour while in custody, active participation in rehabilitation programmes, and a strong likelihood of successful reintegration into society.
The government noted that the decision reflects Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in restorative justice, the need to decongest correctional facilities, and the importance of offering second chances to individuals who have shown genuine transformation. It further emphasized that the criminal justice system should focus not only on punishment but also on rehabilitation and reform.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and Attorney General of Ondo State, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, praised the governor’s action, describing it as a balanced and forward-thinking approach to justice. He said the move reinforces the administration’s commitment to accountability, mercy, and the creation of a society where redemption remains attainable.
