“‘It Is All About Money’ — Sarumi Aliyu Blames Fubara-Wike Clash On Political Overreach”.

Published

on

According to Nivo News, former governorship candidate Bolanle Sarumi Aliyu has described the ongoing impeachment crisis in Rivers State as a manifestation of Nigeria’s entrenched money politics, warning that democratic stability will remain elusive until financial influence over governance is curtailed. Speaking on Arise News on Friday, Sarumi Aliyu said the tension between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike is driven less by ideology or governance concerns and more by monetary interests.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

“I have always said since the time I went into politics that we need to put an end to money politics. If you dig deep into what is happening, it is all about money,” she stated. She explained that the immense financial cost of elections fuels post-election struggles and godfatherism. “In Nigeria, you need to spend billions and billions of naira to become a governor. So definitely there will be drama. One person makes you governor, and then that person wants to control you,” she added.

Sarumi Aliyu noted that pre-election agreements often unravel once power is secured. “Probably there was an agreement: ‘Once I make you governor, you will do X, Y and Z.’ Then the person gets there and forgets who put him there, or he has other plans,” she said, calling the practice shameful and detrimental to democracy. Drawing on her own experience, she said she faced similar pressures during her political pursuits but refused to comply with financial demands to secure votes.

On the subject of godfatherism, Sarumi Aliyu said mentors should guide, not control. “I had godfathers and godmothers, but they were not the type that dictated what I should do. I had good people like former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the late Yeye Alabalosun,” she explained.

Turning to the Rivers crisis, the ADC member said the infighting within the ruling party could present an advantage to opposition parties, provided it does not harm the citizens. “As a political strategist for my party, it is fantastic if they continue to fight, as long as it does not affect the people of Rivers State,” she said, noting that the turmoil could shape the 2027 elections. She criticised the ruling party for inconsistent conduct, arguing that Wike’s continued pursuit of Fubara despite alignment with the party undermines stability.

Sarumi Aliyu also discussed reforms within the ADC, emphasizing the need for real inclusion, especially regarding 30 per cent representation for women and youth. She explained her decision to join the party was rooted in its commitment to women’s participation in politics. She dismissed calls for aspirants to step down in favour of others and stressed that the opposition must unite to challenge the APC effectively. “We cannot have three parties going into a race. It has to be APC versus ADC. PDP is gone, finished,” she said, adding that structural reforms and credible primaries are essential to prevent recurring political crises in Nigeria.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.
