Kidnapping Sparks Fury As Edo Youths Pull Down Tinubu’s 2027 Billboard.
According to Nivo News, unrest broke out in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, on Saturday as angry youths destroyed a 2027 presidential campaign billboard of President Bola Tinubu while protesting the abduction and killing of a young man by suspected kidnappers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The victim was reportedly abducted on January 9, 2026, at Ojo Street in Ihumudumu, Ekpoma, while attempting to enter his brother’s residence. The assailants, said to be about four in number, later killed the young man, triggering outrage across the community.
The incident sparked a violent protest, during which youths vandalised the billboard and set bonfires on the road, disrupting movement in the area. Other properties within the locality were also damaged during the unrest. Footage circulating online captured the moment the billboard, reportedly mounted by the Chairman of Esan West Local Government Area, Ebhodaghe Albert Blessing, was pulled down. The billboard carried the inscription, “Asiwaju 2027 is settled.”
In response to the breakdown of order, the council chairman announced an immediate restriction on the movement of both commercial and private motorcycles within the locality from 7:00 p.m. daily. He urged residents and motorcycle operators to comply with the directive, noting that security agencies had been mandated to enforce the ban and deal decisively with violators, as part of efforts to restore calm and ensure public safety.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Government condemned the destruction of public and private property and cautioned against actions that could further undermine security operations. In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, the government acknowledged citizens’ constitutional right to express grievances but stressed that security-related concerns require calm, coordination and constructive engagement.
The state government warned that road blockages and uncoordinated protests could expose residents to greater risks and be exploited by criminal elements. It reiterated that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration remains responsive to security concerns and is pursuing proactive measures, including strengthening the Edo Security Corps, neighbourhood watch initiatives and sustained collaboration with community leaders and security agencies.
The government urged residents of Ekpoma and the wider Edo community to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security operatives and utilise established channels to share information, assuring them that security strategies are continuously being reviewed and reinforced to protect lives and property across the state.
