Rivers Assembly Moves To Impeach Governor Fubara Over Alleged Misconduct.
The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated a fresh impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Oduh, over alleged misconduct. According to Nivo News, the action was taken after lawmakers, led by Majority Leader Major Jack, leveled eight allegations against the state executive.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The accusations include reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds, hindrance of the Assembly’s constitutional duties, unlawful appointments without legislative screening, and the seizure of lawmakers’ salaries and funds. Additional claims cite the withholding of funds from the Clerk of the House and the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission, as well as refusal to implement constitutional provisions on the financial autonomy of the legislature and judiciary.
Naija News reports that the impeachment process in Nigeria follows a strict seven-step procedure. First, a written notice of allegations must be signed by at least one-third of the Assembly members and presented to the Speaker. The Speaker then serves the notice to the Governor within seven days, outlining the specific charges.
Second, the House votes on whether to investigate the allegations within 14 days. This motion requires the support of at least two-thirds of all members, and failure to secure the necessary votes terminates the process. If approved, the Speaker requests the Chief Judge to constitute a seven-member investigation panel comprised of individuals of unquestionable integrity, who are neither politicians nor public servants.
Third, the panel conducts a thorough investigation over three months, during which the Governor may defend himself personally or through legal representatives. The panel then submits its report to the House. If no misconduct is found, the process ends; if misconduct is established, the House proceeds to a final removal vote.
The seventh and final step requires at least two-thirds of Assembly members to vote in favor of removal. Upon approval, the Governor is immediately dismissed from office, concluding the impeachment process.

‘You Lied’ – El-Rufai Denies Abusing Medical Visit, Demands ICPC Retraction.
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has formally rejected claims by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) that he misused a court-approved medical visit while in detention, characterizing the agency’s account as a misrepresentation of both law and fact. Through his media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, the former governor has called for the immediate release of his personal physician, Professor Bello Abubakar, and requested that the ICPC retract its allegations regarding the violation of a court order.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
-
Medical Justification: El-Rufai’s representatives state that his inability to attend court on July 6 resulted from ongoing health issues that were communicated to the ICPC beforehand. They further assert that his personal doctor had been previously denied access to him at the commission’s facility, contradicting claims that the medical visit was a ploy to avoid court proceedings.
-
Interpretation of Court Orders: Adekeye disputed the ICPC’s allegation that a court order was breached, arguing that the April 1, 2026, order by Justice R.M. Aikawa grants El-Rufai the right to medical care without placing restrictions on visitors during those sessions.
-
Rejection of Political Claims: The former governor’s camp dismissed the description of the hospital visit as a political meeting, noting that it was the ICPC that rescheduled the appointment to a busier morning time slot and that commission staff were present throughout the duration of the visit.
-
Legal Rights and Compliance: El-Rufai’s team emphasized that medical access is a legal right, supported by the Nelson Mandela Rules and the existing court order. They warned that further efforts by the ICPC to restrict his access to family, legal counsel, or medical care could constitute contempt of court.
