Effiong emphasized that the tensions revolve around the vast resources in Rivers State, including petroleum and other minerals, which he described as central to Nigeria’s economy. He suggested that the dispute is less about governance issues and more about control of the state’s financial resources.

“What is unfolding in Rivers is a matter of legal sophistry and clear political enmity between Minister Wike and Governor Fubara,” Effiong said. “The House of Assembly itself has shown little concern for the constitution. This is about the allocation of resources in a state so richly endowed. The real issue concerns approximately N600 billion, and accusations have been made regarding political actors’ interests in this money.”

Describing politics as a reciprocal process, Wike stressed that the era of empty promises was over:

“Leaders must demonstrate their commitment to delivering good governance. You cannot make promises during elections and vanish afterward without fulfilling them. We asked you to support Tinubu, starting with the area council elections. On February 21, you came through, delivering 133 of the 135 polling units in the council for Tinubu. What more can we say but thank you? You have done your part; we will now do ours. Abaji people have spoken, and they spoke decisively,” he said.
