Kano Assembly Endorses Governor Yusuf’s Planned Defection Amid NNPP Turmoil
The Kano State House of Assembly has publicly supported Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s planned defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the party’s ongoing leadership crisis and numerous court cases as threats to his mandate. According to Nivo News, lawmakers argued that remaining in the NNPP platform could pose serious political and legal risks not only for the governor but also for other elected officials in the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Hussaini, told journalists on Wednesday that unresolved internal disputes within the NNPP could lead to a judicial crisis similar to Zamfara State in 2019, where internal party conflicts invalidated primaries and resulted in court rulings that overturned electoral outcomes. He said the party is currently embroiled in factional leadership battles and multiple court cases, creating uncertainty over the legitimacy of its structure and nominations ahead of upcoming elections.
Hussaini noted that a court judgment recognizing a specific faction of the NNPP already exists, adding that staying in the party could invite serious legal consequences. “There is an existing court judgement that recognises a particular faction of the NNPP. We cannot continue to remain in the party and risk a repeat of the legal disaster that happened in Zamfara State,” he said. He explained that the Assembly’s position has fueled calls for Yusuf and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, to consider leaving the NNPP for a more politically stable platform, including the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Nivo News, House members have begun consultations with both Yusuf and Kwankwaso to ensure a consensus on what Hussaini described as a “strategic and timely” exit from the party. He warned that if the NNPP’s factional disputes continue, courts could invalidate the elections of NNPP candidates, even if they win the polls, potentially removing Yusuf and other party officeholders. Hussaini recalled that in Zamfara State in 2019, internal APC disputes prevented valid primaries, and the Supreme Court later declared votes cast for the party wasted, awarding victories to candidates with the next highest votes who met constitutional requirements.
Meanwhile, Senator Kwankwaso has issued a stern warning to members of the Kwankwasiyya movement considering defection. He stressed that political defections rarely occur without incentives and insisted that those leaving must account for past support and labour before crossing over. Kwankwaso cautioned youths and supporters against being swayed by short-term gains, noting that many who defected in the past later regretted their decisions. “The word ‘betrayer’ follows a person; him, his family and even his lineage,” he warned.
In a related development, the NNPP national leadership loyal to Kwankwaso rejected an ex parte order reportedly granted by a Kano State High Court restoring its dissolved executive committees. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, described the order as “a farce” and an abuse of court process, noting that the NNPP National Working Committee had not been served with legal papers and considered the ruling a mere rumor. Johnson added that even if the order existed, it would be legally defective, citing the Supreme Court’s consistent stance that internal party affairs are non-justiciable. The party reaffirmed the dissolution of its Kano State executives and warned that it would explore all legal options, including petitioning the National Judicial Council, against any judicial officer found to have overstepped their authority.

‘You Lied’ – El-Rufai Denies Abusing Medical Visit, Demands ICPC Retraction.
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has formally rejected claims by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) that he misused a court-approved medical visit while in detention, characterizing the agency’s account as a misrepresentation of both law and fact. Through his media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, the former governor has called for the immediate release of his personal physician, Professor Bello Abubakar, and requested that the ICPC retract its allegations regarding the violation of a court order.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
-
Medical Justification: El-Rufai’s representatives state that his inability to attend court on July 6 resulted from ongoing health issues that were communicated to the ICPC beforehand. They further assert that his personal doctor had been previously denied access to him at the commission’s facility, contradicting claims that the medical visit was a ploy to avoid court proceedings.
-
Interpretation of Court Orders: Adekeye disputed the ICPC’s allegation that a court order was breached, arguing that the April 1, 2026, order by Justice R.M. Aikawa grants El-Rufai the right to medical care without placing restrictions on visitors during those sessions.
-
Rejection of Political Claims: The former governor’s camp dismissed the description of the hospital visit as a political meeting, noting that it was the ICPC that rescheduled the appointment to a busier morning time slot and that commission staff were present throughout the duration of the visit.
-
Legal Rights and Compliance: El-Rufai’s team emphasized that medical access is a legal right, supported by the Nelson Mandela Rules and the existing court order. They warned that further efforts by the ICPC to restrict his access to family, legal counsel, or medical care could constitute contempt of court.
