A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Lauretta Onochie, has declared that the latest attempt by the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara is doomed to fail, according to Nivo News.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The impeachment process was initiated on Thursday, with lawmakers also targeting the deputy governor, Ngozi Odu. During plenary presided over by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally read out a notice detailing allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.

The impeachment notice, anchored on Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution, outlined seven allegations, including the alleged unauthorised demolition of the Assembly complex, spending outside approved budgets, withholding of funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and refusal to comply with Supreme Court rulings affirming the financial autonomy of the legislature.

A total of 26 lawmakers endorsed the notice, arguing that the actions attributed to the governor were inconsistent with constitutional provisions.

Reacting to the development via a post on social media, Onochie insisted that the impeachment effort would collapse just like previous attempts. She recalled that earlier moves failed after the Rivers State Chief Judge declined to endorse the process, a constitutional requirement for impeachment to proceed.

Onochie further alleged that President Bola Tinubu had suspended Governor Fubara in 2025 following pressure from lawmakers after their initial impeachment bid failed. She maintained that the same Chief Judge remains in office and would again be required to assent to the current process, making the lawmakers’ efforts futile.

She criticised the Assembly members for what she described as disregard for due process and the rule of law, expressing confidence that the unfolding political drama would ultimately strengthen democratic principles in the state. Onochie added that the people of Rivers State would prevail as events continue to unfold.
