Dessers took to social media to express his disappointment, describing the news as difficult to accept while pledging his full support to the Nigerian team as they continue their AFCON campaign. The former Rangers forward explained that the injury not only affects his international aspirations but also disrupts his club season.
“Unfortunately, I sustained an injury at AFCON. It’s extremely difficult to accept that I will miss the remainder of the tournament and an important period at Panathinaikos,” Dessers wrote. “I will be our biggest fan in these weeks, go full in rehab and hopefully we can celebrate a win and goal together soon.”
The injury occurred during a training session ahead of Nigeria’s match against Uganda, with medical evaluations confirming he would be sidelined for 10 to 12 weeks. This effectively ruled him out of the tournament in Morocco, while the Super Eagles continue their push in the knockout stages.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle acknowledged the seriousness of the injury, noting that it would be unwise to risk the striker’s fitness at this stage. “Dessers spoke with me this morning. He has an injury and will be out for maybe 10 to 12 weeks. I’m disappointed for him, we need to play a good game for him tomorrow. We have to do the work in front of us,” Chelle said.
