Air Marshal Aneke highlighted that the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters is a strategic effort to enhance the operational capabilities of the NAF, strengthen collaboration with surface forces, and ensure mission readiness in combating terrorism and other security threats. He expressed appreciation to the United States Government and Bell Textron for their transparency and professionalism throughout the process.
The Air Chief further described the programme as a symbol of the enduring defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States, reflecting mutual trust, shared values, and a common vision for regional and global security. He stressed the importance of meeting timelines and standards while urging the programme management team to adopt innovative and solutions-driven approaches to complete production efficiently.
Aneke also acknowledged the support of President Bola Tinubu, noting that the helicopters would significantly improve the NAF’s combat capability, operational efficiency, and ability to conduct precise operations while minimizing collateral damage. The advanced platforms are expected to strengthen Nigeria’s efforts against terrorism and criminal activities while safeguarding lives and property.
The purchase of the 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters was initially approved by the U.S. Government in April 2022 through the Defence Security Cooperation Agency. The formal production and delivery contract, valued at $455 million, was awarded to Bell Textron by the U.S. Department of Defense on March 12, 2024.
