Former President Goodluck Jonathan has reiterated his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), promising to play an active and enhanced role in the party’s activities as it prepares for upcoming elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to the factional National Chairman of the PDP, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, Jonathan provided the assurance during a meeting at his Abuja residence with members of the faction’s National Working Committee, party elders, and other stakeholders. The former president reaffirmed his confidence in the PDP as a strong and credible platform for democratic governance in Nigeria.

Turaki stated, “President Jonathan assured us that he remains a card-carrying member of the PDP and that he will actively engage in the party’s affairs going forward.” The delegation’s visit also served to formally introduce the newly elected NWC members and update Jonathan on developments within the party since its last national convention in Ibadan.

The former president expressed appreciation for the visit and highlighted his enduring political and emotional ties to the party that produced him as vice president and president. He emphasized the importance of unity, dialogue, and internal reconciliation while acknowledging the legal challenges the party currently faces. Turaki added that Jonathan maintains that despite ongoing difficulties, the PDP remains a party for Nigerians and a credible vehicle for electoral success.

Meanwhile, the PDP has raised concerns over the independence of the current leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The party accused INEC of obstructing the submission of its governorship candidate for the forthcoming Ekiti State election. While INEC had recognized the present PDP leadership and monitored its primaries in Ekiti and Osun states, recent actions have prompted questions about the commission’s neutrality and operational independence.

Turaki explained that the party had duly notified INEC of its primaries, which were attended, monitored, and officially documented. Although the party was provided with portal access to upload its candidate information, INEC reportedly blocked further uploads, forcing the PDP to submit documents manually—a process the commission acknowledged. Similar procedures were followed in Osun State, reinforcing that INEC had recognized the party’s leadership. However, Turaki indicated that recent developments are raising doubts about the commission’s impartiality.
