NANS Calls Off Nationwide Protest After Talks With FG, FIRS.
The National Association of Nigerian Students has called off its proposed nationwide protest against the newly enacted Tax Reform Act following extensive consultations with key government institutions, including the Federal Inland Revenue Service, the Department of State Services, and the National Assembly.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the protest, which was earlier scheduled for January 14, 2026, was intended to halt the implementation of the law pending public sensitisation and a legislative investigation. However, the students’ body said its position changed after receiving detailed briefings from relevant authorities on the objectives and provisions of the tax reform.
In a communiqué issued after its maiden Expanded National Executive Council meeting, NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, said student leaders across the country were engaged by tax experts and lawmakers who addressed concerns raised by Nigerians regarding the law. He explained that the sessions provided clarity on contentious areas and helped dispel widespread misconceptions surrounding the reform.
Following deliberations, the association concluded that the Tax Reform Act was not aimed at burdening low-income earners but rather structured to promote fairness in revenue generation. NANS stated that the law contains safeguards to protect vulnerable citizens while ensuring that higher-income earners contribute more equitably to national development.
The student body further announced its decision to collaborate with the Federal Government and the FIRS to support public enlightenment on the tax law. It also passed a vote of confidence on the Executive Chairman of the FIRS, Zacch Adedeji, and commended President Bola Tinubu for what it described as policies favourable to students. Consequently, NANS formally suspended the nationwide protest earlier slated for January 14.
The ENEC meeting was attended by representatives of student bodies from universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the six geopolitical zones, including female student leaders and campus coordinators nationwide.
