According to Nivo News, Kano State experienced heightened political tension on Monday as a heavy security presence was reported around the Government House, amid a growing rift between New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf over the governor’s anticipated defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Governor Yusuf, a former protégé of Kwankwaso, is reportedly preparing to leave the NNPP for the APC. The defection, initially expected this week, has been rescheduled for January 12 to allow for wider consultations with stakeholders, particularly members of the state assembly. Kwankwaso accused Yusuf of plotting to return Kano to the influence of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, whom he described as the very figure the NNPP had rescued the state from. “He wants to hand over Kano to former Governor Ganduje,” Kwankwaso stated, signaling a deepening political fallout.

In response, Yusuf’s media aide, Nagoda, sought to calm tensions, emphasizing that the governor continues to respect Kwankwaso as a political leader while asserting that the defection is driven by urgent political realities in Kano. Nagoda referenced ongoing security concerns, including incidents involving the emirate, and argued that joining the APC could help restore order and benefit the state’s residents. On Kwankwaso’s opposition, he added, “We are praying that he softens and leads the way to the APC.”

The anticipated defection has also exposed divisions within the APC. Party chieftain AbdulMajid DanBilki Kwamanda claimed in a viral video that Yusuf and Kwankwaso are collaborating behind the scenes. According to Kwamanda, Kwankwaso is allegedly using Yusuf’s defection to the APC to secure a second term while positioning his deputy, Comrade Aminu AbdulSalam, to contest in the NNPP, ensuring a political advantage regardless of the outcome. He further alleged that Ganduje is involved in a strategy to prevent Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin from contesting the 2027 governorship election.
