Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were apprehended during a pre-dawn operation carried out by US forces in Caracas over the weekend and subsequently flown to New York. The dramatic arrest has triggered strong reactions across Latin America and Europe. Several countries, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay and Spain, issued a joint statement expressing opposition to Maduro’s removal by foreign forces. They also raised concerns about any attempt to impose external control over Venezuela or exploit its natural and strategic resources.

Tensions further escalated after former US President Donald Trump suggested that Washington could assume control of the oil-rich nation. He also warned Venezuela’s interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez, of severe consequences should she fail to cooperate with the United States. Trump indicated that his administration was open to engaging with elements of Maduro’s government, provided American interests—particularly access to Venezuela’s vast oil reserves—are protected.

Rodríguez, who has been sworn in as interim president with backing from the military and the Supreme Court, responded defiantly. She maintained that Maduro remains Venezuela’s only legitimate leader and insisted the country is prepared to defend its sovereignty and natural resources amid growing international pressure.
