Hidden Abuse: Nigerian Men Suffer In Silence Behind Closed Doors.
Behind closed doors, some Nigerian men endure violence, fear, and silence in intimate relationships society assumes they control. According to Nivo News, male survivors of domestic abuse often face stigma, cultural expectations, and weak support systems that prevent them from speaking out. Unaddressed abuse can escalate into severe outcomes, including fatal attacks by intimate partners.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Rotimi Akinjide, 39, a Lagos-based logistics worker, shared how his seemingly ordinary marriage turned violent. His wife, Rebecca, reportedly subjected him to repeated physical assaults over minor disputes, including arguments over WhatsApp posts. Neighbours intervened during one particularly intense confrontation that left their home in disarray, but the abuse persisted. Despite bruises and threats, Rotimi avoided leaving, citing social respectability and his community role.
Similarly, 25-year-old Sola Alade recounted a harrowing relationship with a former girlfriend who monitored his communications obsessively, escalating to physical attacks over perceived infidelity. Alade described how the psychological and emotional toll of the abuse persisted long after the relationship ended, highlighting the lasting impact of intimate partner violence on men.
Experts say men often face barriers to reporting abuse due to societal beliefs that men should be strong and impervious to pain. Gender norms, patriarchal conditioning, and religious pressures further silence male victims, leaving them vulnerable to emotional, psychological, and physical harm. Data from Lagos State indicates that male survivors accounted for hundreds of domestic violence cases between November 2024 and November 2025, though national statistics remain limited due to underreporting.
Some cases have escalated to androcide. In Okene, Kogi State, a woman allegedly killed her husband following a dispute over his taking a second wife. Similarly, Ondo State police confirmed the death of a man after a heated argument with his girlfriend turned fatal. Experts warn that unresolved domestic abuse can spiral into extreme violence when victims or perpetrators reach a breaking point.
Legal protections for male survivors in Nigeria remain weak. While the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act exists, many states have not domesticated it, and law enforcement agencies often dismiss complaints by men, framing them as jokes or “family matters.” Psychologists emphasize that men should feel safe reporting abuse, seek help, and prioritize their safety and well-being. Gender specialists highlight that domestic violence is not gender-exclusive, and male survivors require access to support, advocacy, and protection.
