Godfatherism On The Decline: Analyst Backs Fubara’s Right To Recontest In Rivers.
Legal practitioner and public affairs analyst Justice Osai Ahiakwo has cautioned against renewed efforts to undermine democratic principles in Rivers State as the 2026 political year begins.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, Ahiakwo, in a statement issued from Calabar on Friday, said the recent political tensions reflect the waning influence of godfatherism, intimidation, and elite-driven narratives. He expressed concern that the state’s politics are being dragged into “murky waters” at a time when democratic gains should be consolidated, suggesting that these actions aim to preserve outdated power structures rather than respect the electorate’s will.
Ahiakwo described verbal attacks and political manoeuvres against Governor Siminalayi Fubara as calculated attempts to frustrate his constitutional right to seek a second term. He emphasized that Rivers State has entered a new political era with an enlightened and politically aware electorate, noting that citizens now actively exercise their rights and understand the significance of the ballot.
The analyst identified attempts to enforce a so-called “gentleman agreement” as central to the controversy, warning that such informal arrangements have no legal basis under Nigerian law. He stressed that elevating private deals above constitutional provisions is both unlawful and unacceptable in a democracy.
Ahiakwo further argued that denying a sitting governor the right to recontest violates the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees every qualified Nigerian the freedom to participate in politics and seek elective office. He added that rejecting imposed political deals should be seen not as defiance but as a rejection of political servitude, signaling that no individual or group has the right to monopolize power.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, Ahiakwo insisted that the people of Rivers State are increasingly ready to assert their rights, stating, “Democracy must prevail and the will of the people must remain supreme.”

Fuel Price Drops As NNPC Reduces Pump Price Nationwide.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reduced petrol prices at its retail stations to ₦1,130 per litre in Lagos and ₦1,165 per litre in Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The new rates, effective Wednesday, mark a ₦100 drop from ₦1,230 per litre in Lagos and a ₦95 decrease from ₦1,260 per litre in Abuja.
Observations show that several NNPCL outlets in Lagos, including stations along Isheri Oshun Road, Apple Junction, and Ago Palace Way, have already implemented the revised prices. In Abuja, motorists saw the new ₦1,165 per litre rate at stations in Jabi and Wuse.
The adjustment provides modest relief to consumers who have faced repeated fuel price hikes in recent months.
The reduction comes even as many oil marketers have yet to reflect the earlier ₦100 per litre cut in petrol’s gantry price by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which lowered its price to ₦1,075 following a dip in global crude oil prices.
The previous spike in crude prices was driven by geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Iran, and Israel, which raised concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supply, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit route for oil shipments.
Prices began to ease after former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested the conflict could be resolved soon, alleviating fears of prolonged supply shortages. Brent crude, the global benchmark, fell by about 8.45%, dropping from roughly $110 per barrel to around $92 per barrel. The decline also followed European ministers’ discussions on releasing strategic oil reserves to stabilise energy markets.
