Minority Caucus Launches Probe Into Alleged Alteration of Tax Reform Laws
The minority caucus of the House of Representatives has established a seven-member committee to investigate claims that recently signed tax reform laws were altered after passage by the National Assembly. According to Nivo News, the panel, chaired by Mr. Afam Ogene, representative of Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, will examine the alleged discrepancies between the harmonised version passed by both chambers and the version currently gazetted.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The decision follows claims by Sokoto State lawmaker Abdussamad Dasuki, who alleged that the version of the tax laws currently gazetted differed significantly from the harmonised version approved by both the Senate and the House. Although Speaker Tajudeen Abbas had initially appointed a seven-member panel to investigate the matter, the House later directed the Clerk of the National Assembly to re-gazette the harmonised laws and issue a True Certified Copy to address the controversy.
Despite calls to suspend the new tax regime pending clarification, the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, went ahead with implementation on January 1, 2026. In a statement released on Friday, the minority caucus, led by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, explained that the committee was established to ensure an independent and impartial probe into the allegations.
The committee’s mandate includes obtaining copies of the tax laws passed by both chambers and signed by the President, reviewing the gazetted version for any discrepancies, and recommending actions should any irregularities be confirmed. Other members of the committee include Jonathan Gbefwi, Shehu Fagge, Aliyu Garu, Stanley Adedeji, Ibe Okwara, and Marie Ibikake. The panel has seven days to submit its report to the minority caucus.
The Chinda-led caucus reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerians, particularly the poor and vulnerable, and vowed to pursue the investigation to its logical conclusion.
