The 36-year-old boxer was a passenger in a Lexus SUV involved in a fatal collision on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu in Ogun State. The vehicle reportedly rammed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

Joshua’s longtime personal trainer, Latif “Latz” Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, both aged 36, died instantly at the scene of the accident. Arrangements have been made for their burial, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday at a mosque in London.

Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in Lagos, where he received treatment and was discharged on Wednesday. He remained in Nigeria briefly to recover before departing for the United Kingdom.

The driver of the vehicle, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was arraigned before a magistrates’ court in Sagamu on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to multiple charges. The allegations include causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence. He was granted bail in the sum of five million naira, while the case was adjourned until January 20.

Kayode’s legal counsel described the incident as a tragic accident and suggested that a last-minute change of seating arrangement may have played a role in saving Joshua’s life. The lawyer stated that mechanical failure was suspected, adding that the driver had complained about faulty brakes before the crash.

Investigations into the exact cause of the accident are ongoing, with authorities examining multiple factors, including vehicle condition and road circumstances at the time of the collision.

Joshua, who has family ties to Sagamu, was reportedly travelling to the town to visit relatives for the New Year celebrations. He had been spending extended time in Nigeria following his recent high-profile boxing victory in December.
