Speaking on the development, Major General Michael Onoja said incidents of crime and related criminal activities have declined significantly in the region over the past year. He explained that sustained troop deployments across the South-Eastern states, combined with recent legal actions against the group’s leadership, have weakened the operational capacity of separatist elements.
Onoja noted that the imprisonment of Simon Ekpa by Finnish authorities, alongside the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu in Abuja, has dealt a severe blow to the group’s coordination and ability to carry out attacks. According to him, these developments have disrupted command structures and reduced the frequency of violent incidents.
He stated that criminal activities had previously thrived on attacks against poorly manned checkpoints and security formations, often resulting in the killing of personnel and the seizure of weapons. Such stolen arms, he said, were then used to perpetuate further violence across the region.
The senior military officer stressed that the recent setbacks suffered by the group have significantly degraded its capabilities, leading to a noticeable reduction in insecurity. He assured residents that the military would sustain ongoing operations to consolidate the gains achieved, safeguard lives and property, and prevent criminal elements from regrouping in the South-East.
