The student union has declared January 14, 2026, as a National Day of Action, announcing plans to stage a large-scale protest in Abuja over what it described as a controversial and disputed Tax Reform Law. The planned demonstration comes amid growing public debate, despite President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assertion that there are no substantial issues warranting a suspension of the reform process.
The tax reform has generated widespread controversy following claims that the versions of the laws gazetted differ from those passed by the National Assembly. Several stakeholders, including the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigeria Labour Congress, and the minority caucus in the House of Representatives, have called for the implementation to be halted pending proper clarification.
A member of the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, had earlier alleged inconsistencies between the copies approved by lawmakers and those later published officially. Reacting to the government’s decision to proceed regardless, NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, criticised the move, describing it as premature and contrary to democratic principles.
Oladoja stated that enforcing the tax laws from January 1 while critical issues remained unresolved was dangerous and inconsistent with claims of participatory governance and democratic values. He added that the Presidency’s reaffirmation of the policy amounted to a serious affront to Nigerians and reflected what he termed high-handedness and disregard for public opinion.
The NANS leader announced that students would assemble at Unity Fountain in Abuja on January 14 before marching to the Presidential Villa. He urged all NANS structures nationwide, including campus chapters, state and zonal bodies, to immediately commence massive mobilisation for what he described as a peaceful protest.
He emphasised that the students’ demand was clear and non-negotiable, calling for the immediate suspension of the implementation of the disputed Tax Reform Law.
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), also warned that the new tax regime could face legal challenges if concerns surrounding its authenticity are not resolved. Speaking to journalists in Ilawe-Ekiti, Falana argued that the government should have used the final days of 2025 to address public concerns and release verified copies of the laws.
He maintained that commencement could not proceed without what he described as “clean copies,” adding that allegations of inserted provisions amounted to forgery. Falana further criticised the National Assembly for failing to make the laws easily accessible online and threatened legal action over what he called discriminatory tax exemptions granted to wealthy companies operating within Free Trade Zones.

Deregistration Drama: Courtroom Showdown Over ADC And Accord Party Hits A New Delay!.
-
Case Adjournment: The Court of Appeal in Abuja has postponed the hearing of an appeal regarding the potential deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party, and three other political parties until July 7.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

-
Procedural Delay: The court moved the hearing date from June 25 to allow the involved parties sufficient time to file and exchange their briefs of argument.
-
Reasoning for New Date: Although Accord Party counsel, Musibau Adetunbi (SAN), requested a three-day window to file, Justice Abubakar Mohammed explained that the panel’s upcoming official commitments necessitated selecting July 7 as the earliest available date.
-
Background of the Dispute: The appeal follows a Federal High Court ruling by Justice Peter Lifu, which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the ADC, Accord Party, Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) for allegedly failing to meet constitutional performance benchmarks.
-
INEC’s Position: INEC has challenged this deregistration order, arguing that these parties met the necessary constitutional thresholds by securing elective positions in previous elections and providing certificates of return as evidence.
-
Stay of Execution: On June 16, the Court of Appeal previously ordered a stay of execution on the Federal High Court’s judgment, preventing INEC from proceeding with the deregistration until the current appeal is decided.
-
Procedural Criticism: The appellate court had previously criticized Justice Lifu for ignoring an earlier order to suspend proceedings, noting that such an action undermined the established hierarchy of the courts.
-
Origin of the Suit: The original legal challenge was filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, who argued that these specific parties failed to meet the electoral performance standards required by the 1999 Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act.
