APC Inches Closer To Historic 30-State Control As Governors Keep Defecting.

Published

on

According to Nivo News, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is approaching a historic milestone, potentially controlling up to 30 of Nigeria’s 36 states following a surge in defections from opposition parties. Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and is set to formalize his registration with the APC, while Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has signaled a likely move from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Once Mutfwang’s transition is complete, the APC will have 28 governors, matching the record previously set by the PDP after the 2003 elections. Unlike that period, however, the APC’s rapid expansion—from 20 governors after the 2023 elections—has largely been fueled by defections, raising concerns over political power concentration and potential one-party dominance.

Speculations continue over other first-term governors, including Zamfara State’s Dauda Lawal and Abia State’s Alex Otti, who are reportedly weighing a switch to the APC. Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has also announced plans to join the ruling party, although the formalities are pending. Plateau Governor Mutfwang cited “purposeful leadership, clarity of direction, and effective service delivery” as motivations for his defection, emphasizing that alignment with the APC would advance development objectives and accelerate governance dividends.

Political analysts have noted that the wave of defections underscores systemic weaknesses in Nigerian politics. Prof. Hassan Saliu of the Nigerian Political Science Association observed that party loyalty often succumbs to personal interests and political survival, while Prof. Gbade Ojo of the University of Ilorin warned that the increasing dominance of a single party risks alienating voters and undermining internal party democracy. Dr. Edun Abdulkareem, also of the University of Ilorin, contended that party recruitment is part of normal politics and urged opposition parties to strengthen internal cohesion rather than blaming the APC for defections.

The APC’s expansion is accompanied by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly, consolidating its influence over national policymaking. While parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have emerged as potential opposition forces, concerns remain that continued defections may weaken legislative oversight and citizen engagement. The APC has maintained that its recruitment efforts are legitimate political practices and not intended to compromise democratic processes.

The high-level delegation to be led by Vice President Shettima will include Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, various ministers, and other senior government officials.

Agenda in New York

The 81st UNGA General Debate is scheduled to take place from September 22 to September 28, 2026, under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

According to the Presidency’s statement, Vice President Shettima will represent President Tinubu at the summit. His engagements will include:

  • High-Level Meetings: Participating in discussions on critical topics such as the Right to Development and climate action.

  • Bilateral Engagements: Joining the traditional reception for Heads of Delegation and holding a series of meetings with world leaders, heads of international organizations, and development partners.

The announcement was made by the state party chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, during the inauguration of the Tinubu-Hamzat Campaign Council at the APC secretariat in Ogba, Ikeja.

According to Ojelabi, this measure is designed to ensure that all candidates and party members remain fully focused on campaign preparations and mobilization activities. He also cautioned against underestimating opposition parties, stressing the need for total commitment to the electoral process.

Key Highlights from Chairman Ojelabi’s Address:
