Scorpion Venom Worth Millions: Nigeria Eyes Untapped Biotech Goldmine
According to Nivo News, Nigeria is quietly ente.ring a lucrative niche in the global biomedical market through commercial scorpion venom production, a sector where a single gallon of purified venom can fetch up to $39 million. The venom, derived from carefully farmed scorpions, is increasingly sought after for its applications in cancer therapy, neurological research, and treatment of drug-resistant infections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a modest laboratory in Isolo, Lagos, retired Nigerian Air Force corporal Muhammad Usman has pioneered one of the country’s first commercial scorpion farms. Usman, who served in several military operations across northern Nigeria, applied the discipline and precision learned in uniform to a new venture: breeding and extracting venom from thousands of scorpions under carefully controlled conditions. The venom is harvested using low-voltage electrostimulation, a method that does not harm the animals and allows them to be reused in future extraction cycles.
Each scorpion enclosure replicates natural habitats, ensuring the creatures’ longevity and optimal venom quality. Feeding, environmental enrichment, and stress management are essential, as the potency and composition of venom depend on the animal’s well-being. The operation, while capital-intensive, positions Nigeria to participate in a growing global market where demand for high-quality scorpion venom is rising.
Experts note that scorpion venom contains bioactive peptides capable of distinguishing cancer cells from healthy cells, aiding in tumour imaging, targeted therapy, and experimental drug development. Research has also demonstrated potential applications for neurological disorders, autoimmune conditions, cardiovascular diseases, and antimicrobial treatments. Despite these opportunities, Nigeria remains largely absent from large-scale venom-based biomedical research, with most extraction limited to small-scale private operations focused on raw material export.
Usman’s enterprise exemplifies the potential of converting overlooked natural resources into high-value biomedical products. Advocates call for government support, institutional research, and regulatory frameworks to scale the industry sustainably, ensuring ecological preservation while tapping into a promising sector that blends agriculture, science, and medicine.
