According to Nivo News, the Secretary General of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Mohammed Abubakar, and human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong have called on state governors to support President Bola Tinubu in implementing local government autonomy. Their appeal follows President Tinubu’s remarks during the 15th National Executive Committee meeting of the All Progressives Congress at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, where he urged compliance with the Supreme Court verdict. Tinubu warned that failure by governors to adhere to the ruling could compel him to issue an executive order ensuring that allocations from the Federation Account are paid directly to local governments.

The President’s position is based on the Supreme Court judgment delivered on July 11, 2024, which upheld the Federal Government’s suit to enforce financial autonomy for local councils. Abubakar, in an interview, described the ruling as unambiguous and stressed that local government funds must be disbursed directly to the councils. He praised Tinubu’s public commitment, saying it demonstrated strong political will to implement autonomy.

Effiong echoed the call, noting that enforcement of the Supreme Court judgment falls under the responsibilities of the Attorney General of the Federation and the President. He criticized governors who resist the ruling, calling their stance “troubling” and urging full compliance to uphold democratic principles.

Both Abubakar and Effiong stressed that cooperation from all stakeholders is essential for the effective implementation of local government autonomy and for respecting the authority of the nation’s highest court.
