‘I Won’t Play Politics With Lives’ — Akeredolu Remembered Two Years After.
According to Nivo News, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has described the late former governor of the state, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, as a pivotal figure whose influence continues to shape Nigeria’s security framework two years after his passing.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a tribute released on Saturday to commemorate the second anniversary of Akeredolu’s death, Aiyedatiwa noted that the former governor’s unwavering advocacy for state policing and his instrumental role in the creation of the South-West Security Network, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps, marked a significant shift in subnational security management in the country.
The governor portrayed Akeredolu as a bold and principled leader whose legacy remains deeply felt in Ondo State and across the nation. He said the late governor’s demise was a profound loss, not only to the state but also to Nigeria, stressing that his ideals continue to inspire and challenge leaders at all levels.
Aiyedatiwa recalled that Akeredolu emerged as a leading voice for decentralised policing at a time when insecurity had become a pressing national concern. Driven by his resolve to safeguard lives and property, the former governor mobilised his South-West counterparts to establish the Amotekun Corps as a regional security response.
He further reflected on Akeredolu’s uncompromising position on security matters, recalling his famous declaration that he would not play politics with the lives of his people. According to Aiyedatiwa, the establishment of Amotekun represented a defining moment that redefined Nigeria’s approach to internal security at the subnational level.
The governor noted that what initially began as a regional initiative has gradually gained national recognition, with recent Senate resolutions aligning with broader efforts to decentralise policing and strengthen intelligence-driven security, a development that could lead to constitutional and legislative backing.
Beyond security, Aiyedatiwa said Akeredolu’s leadership style was firmly rooted in mentorship, continuity and institutional stability. He recalled that the former governor consistently emphasised the duty of leaders to deliberately groom future generations and create room for growth through trust and guidance.
As Ondo State marked the second anniversary of Akeredolu’s passing, Aiyedatiwa said the government and people of the state remained united in honouring his contributions to governance, security and development. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to preserving the late governor’s ideals and supporting the foundation established by the Akeredolu family to sustain his legacy.
The governor concluded by offering prayers for the peaceful repose of Akeredolu’s soul and expressed hope that Ondo State would continue to draw strength from his life of courage, service and principled leadership.
