According to Nivo News, the United States has conducted a series of air strikes against Islamic State (ISIS) militants operating in north-west Nigeria, following mounting concerns over violent attacks in the region. In a message shared late on Christmas Day, President Trump said the military action targeted ISIS fighters accused of carrying out brutal attacks, particularly against Christian communities in northern Nigeria. He described the operation as decisive and forceful, warning that extremist violence against innocent civilians would no longer be tolerated.

The strikes followed weeks of stern warnings from the U.S. administration over what it described as a sharp escalation in attacks linked to ISIS and affiliated extremist groups, especially in parts of Sokoto State near the Niger Republic border. Senior officials had earlier described the violence against Christians as reaching alarming levels unseen for decades.

In November, President Trump reportedly directed the Pentagon to prepare for possible military action should Nigerian authorities fail to strengthen protections for persecuted religious groups. Shortly after the operation, the Pentagon released a brief unclassified video believed to show missile launches connected to the strikes.

Administration officials reiterated that the president had made it clear that the killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria and other parts of the world must come to an end, noting that the Christmas Day operation sent a strong message to extremist groups.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it was notified ahead of the air strikes and explained that the action was carried out within the framework of ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and its international partners, including the United States. The ministry emphasized that the operation reflected structured collaboration in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, rather than any unilateral military action.

According to him, the combined pressure from security forces, supported by the state government and the Inspector-General of Police, led to the successful outcome of the operation.
