The legal action was instituted at the Chief Magistrate Court sitting along Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Kaduna. The defendants, identified as George Udom and Bello Isiaka, were accused of publishing a controversial post tagged “Breaking News” on their respective Facebook pages on Tuesday morning.
Sheikh Gumi alleged that the posts claimed that the family of the Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, would be eliminated if military operations against bandits were not halted. He maintained that the publication was falsely attributed to him, noting that his photograph was allegedly attached to the statement, thereby giving the impression that he authored and issued the threat.
The cleric told the court that the publication triggered widespread reactions, as he received multiple phone calls from members of the public who believed he was responsible for the statement and was attempting to intimidate the defence minister in the discharge of his official duties.
He further stated that the alleged post portrayed him as a threat to public peace, a position he said sharply contradicted his long-standing reputation as a religious leader known for preaching peace and harmony within and outside Nigeria.
According to the complainant, the publication was capable of inciting public unrest in Kaduna State, particularly in Southern Kaduna, and could also place his life at risk by casting him as a suspect should any attack occur against the defence minister’s family.
Sheikh Gumi argued that the actions of the defendants amounted to an attempt to cause public disturbance and constituted criminal defamation of his character. He added that the alleged acts contravened Sections 59, 57, 372, 116, and 117 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017.
The application, dated December 24, 2025, was filed by a legal team led by Suleiman Lere, with the complainant urging the court to summon the defendants to respond to the allegations.
